Yes, as sure as I can be. It was in Dick Knight's book.

I believe Dick Knight to be mistaken, then.

Only two houses have gardens that back directly onto Withdean. My parents were at the game so it wasn't them, and somehow John Catt seems an unlikely candidate...

Perhaps his moaning was all just a front. He really loves a bit of football, but couldn't be seen to be letting down his rebel image.

Closely followed by "The Withdean Screamer".

The Rockets came from behind the trees. No idea if it was a garden that backs onto it or not, but it was a resident of the local area. There was one game, were we score maybe 4+ goals and they run out of Rockets.

I hated that place, yes we had some good times towards the begining and the end, however there was a long time in the middle, where it was utter gash. The only thing that was better at Withdean were the turnstiles.

John Catt moved into the house quite a long after we started at Withdean, which was why it was such a pain in the backside when he started his proceedings complaining about the noise.
This chap had a radio, so didn't have sight of the pitch but his garden did either face the pitch or the nature reserve.

Their garden didn't back directly on to Withdean, if it had you probably would have seen where the rockets came from. But they DEFINITELY lived in the immediate vicinity.

I miss that too - I was usually the first person of many to shout at Bernie (think that was his name) as he made his way along the South. :O

It's one of those traditions that came over from the Goldstone - though to be fair the board then was usually taken around during the second half so the abuse was justified!

I don't get to do it at the Amex 'cos people might think it a little odd ranting at a screen...

Great memories such as Listening to "My garden shed is bigger than this."

Always loved the place ever since 1972 and taking Steve Ovett's Brighton & Hoves' Schools u-12's 400m record. Cinder track and running spikes.

Bernie's photo still appears on the Amex screens every game though. Ten thousand people probably wonder who it is.

That's just about the spot that Nathan Jones had one leg disappear down a hole to knee level, during the very very wet New Years day 2000/2001 game against Southend.
One of the funniest things I have seen at a football match, but it was very fortunate Jonesy didn't get badly injured.

Remember being at that one. 2-0 to Southend. The area of the pitch near the dugouts was a swimming pool. Missed Freeman's landmark goal the year before due to getting a burger after passing through the South-stand turnstiles.
