Brazil set to host 2014 World Cup

Brazil has launched a bid to host the 2014 World Cup
The 2014 World Cup looks certain to take place in Brazil after Colombia, the only other candidates, pulled out of the running.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) handed its bid document to world governing body Fifa on Friday.

The five-time world champions have to finalise their bid, including government guarantees, by June 2007.

Fifa will conduct an inspection visit of Brazil in September 2007 before naming the 2014 hosts in November.

Brazil have hosted the event once before in 1950, when its team lost 2-1 to Uruguay in the final.

Four previous World Cups have been held in South America: Uruguay 1930, Brazil 1950, Chile 1962 and Argentina 1978.

The Brazilian bid has faced criticism at home, amid warnings that the country's infrastructure is not up to scratch.

i'm willing to bet a MILLION pounds with you kevin that mclaren won't be in charge in 2014

I dont think you will get many takers for that bet.

The Radio 5 Live world football phone in at 2-30am every Fri night/Sat morning is well worth a listen. One of the weekly experts, Tim Vickery, lives in Brazil and is one of the worlds best authorities on South American football. He says the infrastructrure and violence is so bad in Brazil, he finds it hard to see how they could ever host the World Cup. He says most of the stadiums are crap too.

That didn't stop Sepp Blatter and FIFA from picking South Africa to host the next World Cup, and they're probably even worse off than Brazil.

I would love to see it, and it may of course happen with resources diverted into the game to ensure it becomes reality, but where will the funds come from?
I would prefer to see it shared between Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Southern Brazil, sharing costs and facilities.
Sadly crime rates in Brazil are vicious, particularly in the big cities. Sao Paulo is currently very bad.
However if you are thinking of visiting, once outside the big cities you would be unlucky to become involved in an incident.
Brazil continues to remain one of my all time favourite destinations, with sense and respect it can still make a fabulous holiday.

Ooh ooh ooh, if they're picking crap places to hold it, can we have it please?

We'll have one and a half football stadia big enough by 2014, and I'm sure we can throw a few temporary stands around some Eircom League grounds! Sure it'll be fine...

And you could outsource a few matches to Withdean if there aren't enough grounds!

I thought this was all but confirmed that it was going to be there, or the USA but seen that they had it in '94 then it was going to south america hence why we were looking to bid for 2018

being one of these 'inspectors' (for FIFA, Olympics, etc) must be one of the cushiest jobs going.. jetting around the world, no doubt at someone else's expense..

more likely than not endeing up paid for by the fan, through huge ticket prices.. grr
