I mostly agree with the sentiment on this thread, but thats bollocks isn't it? The soldiers who died in WW1 died because one royal family didn't get on very well with another one.

not really, thats a pretty simplistic view, you have to look at the hapsburg empire as well as german colonial ambition before you start blaming it on the family rivalry between the german , british and russian royal families, im pretty sure they were all cousins as well, there is a quote from kaiser wilhelm about " george and nicky being beastly"or someting similar.

The fact is that a new consolidated German military leadership (mainly Prussian) represented the big swinging dicks in the German leadership around this time and they pulled Kaiser Wilhelm's strings. They (and the Kaiser) had an inferiority complex with Britain's status as a global power and in order to compete on the global stage they first needed absolute superiority on the continent.

Following Franz Ferdinand's death the opportunity for continental superiority presented itself. Before Austro-Hungary delivered an ultimatum to Serbia concerning the assasination they sought confirmation of Germany's support under the terms of the Holy Alliance. Germany gave their support but it was conditional that the Austro-Hungarians make the terms on Serbia even harsher. This was a calculated gamble by the Germans which caused a crisis in the Austro-Hungarian leadership as they knew that they were pretty much f***ed and reliant on Germany.

Russia supported Serbia (the Germans thought they wouldn't) through their Balkan League Alliance and mobilised, the Russians requested that France support them and mobilise through there own seperate Russo-Franco Alliance. Britain at this stage was not drawn in at this point under any European Alliance.

Mobilisation across Europe was well underway then and the war seemed inevitable, however George V and Nicholas II both persoanlly contacted Wilhelm whilst he was on a Baltic cruise to ask him to pull Germany back from the brink. Wilhelm dismissed his cousins' requests out of hand.

But even before war was declared Russia and France sought a political solution and pulled their forces back from their frontiers to prevent any itchy fingers causing the a continental war. Germany however was on its own orbit and had no intention of peace with France, Russia or Britain (sound familiar).

Hence Germany declared war on Russia and then France 2 days later. Britain did in fact declare war on Germany because they went straight through neutral Belgium to attack france with whom Britain had a treaty.

So there it is then, not that much about Royal families falling out but much more to do with German militarism.

I've worked on a few University student misconduct matters in my time, both as a Students' Union Vice-President and working for Universities. Most Universities reserve the right to kick students out for anything that may bring the good name of the institution into disrepute.

In this case, I would say that the student would have to have a very good explaination of events to avaid getting kicked off.

Now who's being simplistic?

I don't disagree that German weltpolitik was a factor, but no more so than British power-mongering, Russian greed, French antagonism, unstable countries a thousand miles away and diplomacy politics by royal families and aristocratic politicians. All in all, little to do with freedom, and even less to do with the poor working class bastards that gave their lives.

Unlike WW2 which (apart from being a result of the pathetic mismanagement that was WW1) really was a case of freedom vs evil.
