Took it for a spin tonight for 15 minutes as I last gave it a run at the end of September (first time since last winter). Just wanted to check all was well with the system. 15 minutes was all I could handle before the house was too hot for me. Having grown up in the 50s and 60s in a bungalow with metal framed, single glazed windows that included frozen condensation in the mornings, and eventually a coke fired central heating system of intermittent warmth, I'm clearly still a cold house creature.

I can recommend a stand alone plug in towel rail barely costs anything and is great to get a towel dry rather than stick the whole CH on

We've had it on five times this week - a couple of mornings and three evenings - for 45 minutes each time.

The temperature according to the Hive was at, or just below, 16 degrees each time - and that seems to the point where it starts to feel cold enough to pop it on.

With doors closed to the main rooms we want to heat up, it makes all the difference, even if Hive is only showing an uplift of about 1.2 - 1.5 degrees each time.

That we are getting to 16 degrees, or below, when others on here are still at 18-19 degrees makes me question the insulation of our house though!

Still haven't put it on this season. We're down to 16C on the thermostat. Was cold last night and this morning, and this evening. The Mrs is yet to complain, which I'm stunned by. If we can ride out tonight (which looks extremely likely), there's a warmer spell for the rest of the week, so should be able to ward it off well into November, at the least.

The last couple of days have definitely seen me tempted, I’m amazed Mrs DFP hasn’t requested for it to be fired up. She’s out drinking tonight so she’ll sleep through and hopefully I’ll survive another week before succumbing to the inevitable.

Long before the energy crisis, we spent time insulating our 1941-built semi chalet as much as we could, in two refurbishments 15 and 10 years ago. Lots of insulation board, doubled up, packed in all the loft spaces, 12” of sheep-wool insulation on rafters, double and triple glazed new windows, insulation between floor joists, and we had contractors insulate the wall cavities. It all definitely made a difference, but the thermal loss will never be near that attainable in a quality new build.

It was much cheaper to do then, material prices have rocketed since.

I hadn’t but decided to do a trial run this morning, for a hour.
I have a smart meter so got up at 6:30am and took reading. I have E7 until 7:30 (electricity).
Due to time, the electricity wasn’t too bad, but the gas used was £1.50. I was surprised .
This is probably because my gas per kWh is almost 4 times more in price than last year, when I was on a cheaper fix.
I‘m out this evening so I’ve turned the heating back off and will try and manage without it for a few more weeks.
Extra jumper and hot water bottle in bed!

Our house has not dropped below 18 so far. We do have heating on for an hour in the morning now, set at 21 which maybe what is keeping the overall temperature up. I think my wife would leave me if the house was 16, she’s cold even at 20!

No. Not even being discussed in our house. Still working in shorts and t shirt as well.

I'd agree with that, having just finished a two storey side extension to our house a year ago it is noticeable that new part of the building retains it's heat much better than the older part.

I certainly don't feel the cold as much as Mrs B, but I was on the cool side before bed last night. I did contemplate giving it a 30-45 minute boost around 10pm but figured I'd be in bed before too long so held off.

In contrast, it was 13.8 degrees when I got out of bed this morning but I didn't feel cold. Cool, yes, but not "bbbrrrrrr it's bloody freezing" As I type Hive says it's 14.7 degrees but, again, it doesn't feel cold. I'm just in a t-shirt, hoody and shorts.

Our house has not dropped below 18 so far. We do have heating on for an hour in the morning now, set at 21 which maybe what is keeping the overall temperature up. I think my wife would leave me if the house was 16, she’s cold even at 20!

I did anticipate having the heating on this morning but being the weekend, I wasn't sure what time we'd be up so I figured I'd just put it on when I got up - as I'm always up before Mrs B to walk the dog - so the house was warmed up for when she got out of bed, but it just didn't feel like it needed it, even though it was below 14 degrees. In pre-energy crisis days, I probably would have put it on, but as it didn't feel like it really needed it, I didn't. We'll save the gas for when it's properly cold!

We are having an extended summer. Our son and his family came for a week last week and we went to the beach most days and swam in the sea.
Once the colder weather starts it gets very chilly indoors as we don't have central heating, stone floors and no insulation in the walls as they are single brick.
So to answer the OP, No. but I have put the fans away :)

Cold night last night and no sun today has meant the house has cooled significantly, down to 16.5c through the house. I'm not putting the CH on but putting the wood burner on for the first time to keep one room warm.

Reckon I can get away with no CH for at least another 10 days, this mild weather is very welcome and many are gonna really struggle with bills doubling even after government assistance

16.5 v 13.8 here.

I've just filled out a "contact us" form for a local insulation company :ROFLMAO:
