Have you ever gone to a game only to find it was sold out

and you couldn't get in?

Years ago I went to WHL to watch Spurs vs Bolton and got there only to find it was sold out, fecking annoying to have driven from Brighton specifically. I guess it doesn't happen much these days but in the days before mobile phones and the internet it could happen easily so this thread probably only applies to the oldies?

Yes, Anderlecht against Antwerp, a work colleague had phoned up a couple of days earlier to find out if it was already sold out and was told that it wasn't...unfortunately, despite turning up in good time, there were no tickets left...but we did get to see the two sets of fans knock lumps out of each other, but legged it just before the cops opened up on them with water cannon.

That never happened at White Hart Lane in the past as all you had to do was offer the gatemen £10 and they let you slip by the turnstile without clicking it but that is not possible now in most grounds.

I turned up to watch Brighton vs QPR about 5/6 years ago and it was sold out. Turned away from the away end AND the home end (unless it was all ticket, but I don't think it was). Didn't travel too far to get there as I was visiting friends in London, but annoying nonetheless.

I went to WHL once to see Spurs v Villa in the Gazza era. There were six of us and the first three got in before the gateman said it was full and he had to close. £20 c.i.h. saw the other three climb over no problem.

It was when they were redeveloping the ground and it was a top two clash in Division 2, must have been about 1975? There were hundreds locked out and it was amusing to watch and listen to an old guy pleading with the turnstile guys claiming he'd been to big European games at the last minute and had never known WHL totally sold out EVER. He argued for at least 15 mins at which stage I figured I'd leave as if he wasn't gonna get in nor was I!

Myself and family turned up to an Albion game back during the Priestfield days, and being 20 minutes late of kick off, the gates were locked. So we stood for 30 minutes in the rain in Gillingham and were allowed in at half time.

We lost the game.

How could I have forgotten Albion v Pompey in the cup in the early 90's, there must have been thousands locked out of that one, we couldn't get into the North Stand as it was already full with just under an hour to go to kick off.

Sorry but that made me laugh, you probably enjoyed the 1st 45 mins more than those actually in the ground.

It was a depressing evening all round.

Brighton V West Ham during the 80's we won 3-0 all early goals - The game was all ticket but I was living near Watford at the time and did'nt know - managed to get a ticket from a tout but a copper saw me and made me give it back to him and whilst I was still trying to get in Brighton kept scoring - ended back in Watford before the final whistle went!

Went to an opening season game at Cambridge a few years back. Although nowhere near sold out, they would not admit one of my lads & me so we spent the time in a nearby pub and spent less than the admin money on a rather good afternoon, beer, Sky sports, pool.

Judging by the fans who joined us after the 0-0 game, we certainly had the better afternoon.

Cheltenham away a few seasons ago. Was oblivious to this being all-ticket to away fans with being an exile (I think it was made all-ticket last minute). Argued my case with the stewards who let me in as I had travelled a couple of hours for the game. Was about to get more than a little annoyed if I had been turned away.

Probably helped that this was whent he away end was still terraced.
