Well, this wasn't about Dawkins, but feel free to give examples. I bet that his arguments on evolution have far fewer holes than the only other explanation available - creationism. So the Earth's only 6,000 years old and we were created by a supreme being???

The main problem here is that evolution is so accepted by scientists that they've stopped bothering to explain it to us - you get more taught more RE than evolution in school, but it's evolution that explains who we are!

That's what makes it possible for the creationists to take information and communicate it as though it's a flaw in evolutionary theory - just like the example Simster gave.

Congrats, you seem to have a better grasp of this stuff than most people on here.

But it's not the banks paying for it, it's governments, so you & me. However 80 odd countries have contributed to this project, over 1000 scientists from over 500 institutions around the world.

"Cern had to borrow hundreds of millions of euros in bank loans to get the LHC completed."

Really, I didn't know that. I had assumed that each of the member countries had paid their allocation, raised however they wanted to do it in their country.

I don't know if anyone's done this already, but the Sun have come out with an all-time classic today on Page 3.

Keeley, 21, from Bromley (who incidentally is looking MIGHTY fine), said: "It's so exciting. The machine's main purpose is to explore the validity and limitations of the current theoretical picture for particle physics."

Genius.

:bowdown::bowdown:

:lolol:

I can't help feeling it's fortunate for the CERN scientists that they didn't choose anywhere near Falmer to build their tunnel.

"Discovering hitherto unknown truths about the Earth's creation? Bollocks to that, what about our POND?"

apparently this thing will create a temperature 100,000 times hotter than the sun.

Are you sure you're not getting confused with Alan Partridge's service station apple pie?
???

The stupid cow in our Slough canteen put Colelaw in my Cheese and Onion toastie today. I didn't want a Cheese, Onion & Coleslaw toastie, I just wanted Cheese & Onion. Its not rocket science love.

They say the particles that are being fired off around this tunnel are the smallest known to man. I'm guessing they extracted them from our the brains of the canteen staff in Slough. This may also explain why they forgot to put out knifes and forks today as well.

I think you're missing both the big picture and the big bang here.

I love that expression. One day I'd love to ask a rocket scientist what they describe as something really difficult that they're failing to grasp. It'll probably just be the boring old brain surgery fallback though. :(

What will they do with the £5billion Hadron Collider once the experiments are over? I could see this being an even bigger white elephant than the Millennium Dome and Darren Bent put together.

Maybe the technology can be used for something else, to make the world a better place. Improve cuckoo-clock manufacturing?

Travelling in a big circle 11,000 times a second is, of course, the world's best fairground ride waiting to happen. They'll need a dodgy bloke with a microphone shouting "room for 1 or 2 more riders" though obviously.
