ideally we all would

but if you're on benefits, or in a low paid job, or like me living off freelance work (so some weeks i'm skint and some weeks i'm not) with the added anti-bonus of a high cost of living....and you fancy some fun with your mates to take the edge of your dire existence....what wins? several cheap pints of a couple of expensive ones?

If your existence is that shit, go for the meths or the lighter fuel.

Or the one-time-use all-purpose drain cleaner.

Have to say always thought I hated ale but when on holiday in Cornwall recently I drank mostly Tribute and Doom Bar which I really liked.

You should have tried the St.Austell Proper Job, an ale of distinction.

People are drinking it because it's cheaper. As soon as larger prices come down, or Ale goes up, people will change. Unless of course the economy picks up pronto.

People are drinking Real Ale because just like me they have discovered that it tastes better than lager and does not leave you with a shite hangover. If I go to
a pub without Real Ale or Guinness then I'd rather drink lemonade than shite lager.

Don't breweries up to a certain size get tax-duty breaks ?

Good point, their corporation tax is less, something I actually raised earlier in the thread. Doh.

ALL of them?

Light, Golden, Best, Stout, Porter? All taste like drainwater? My dear fellow, you must drink some VERY high quality drainwater varieties.

Well I don't think I've tried all of them, funnily enough.

But it's one of those things that I want to like, but I just don't. A bit like mushrooms. And poor people.

Why are smaller breweries able to charge a lot less for their product than the larger corporations? Ale is generally much cheaper than the mass produced lagers. Why don't economies of scale play a part? Are lager buyers simply being stitched up?

yes they have share holders and advertising costs, hence real men drink ale and girls follow Fasion.

Has some Doom Bar the other day, faucking ace. I dont consider tetlies or john smiths real ales, neither do I consider supermarket ales as real ales. Maybe thats my opinion but I go by taste.

yep. we only have to see price difference between Wetherspoons and fancy bars to see the average lager drinker is being tucked up a treat. its not just them, i like wheat beer and pay royally for the privilege. the tax breaks are a factor too, half the duty for smallest producers.

Well sortof, it's not really just a technicality as all real ales are live. Bottled ales never taste the same as real ales.

it might not taste the same, does that mean its inferior in a bottle? i like Wells Waggle Dance from the bottle but didnt find it nearly as pleasant draft. local supermarkets sell Darkstar Sunburst and Arundal Gold which are very nice, as are many of the Wells and Badgers ranges (Golden Glory is fantastic). why write them of simply because they are bottled?

No, absolutely not, I agree with you... But it does explain why pubs are so important, when it comes to real ale. Whereas most (commonly available) lager tastes like gnats piss whether from a tin or from a pump.

Get your arse down to Hanover beer festival next weekend and try as many different types as possible! If you don't find anything you like then it's probably time to give up...

Mushrooms, much like real ales, come in many different guises by the way!

These are the "Greene Kings of the west", St Austell are gradually buying up all the pubs in Devon and Cornwall and turning them to crap, and Doom Bar seems to be in nearly every pub in Brighton now.

I just said I liked it - I didn't say you had to drink it.

You should have tried the St.Austell Proper Job, an ale of distinction.

I did and I agree.
