Has Brighton(as in the city) improved this decade?

Firstly, I can't believe we are already in 2007, this decade has flown by.

But this progress towards 2010 has got me thinking, has the city improved in the last 7 years?

I think it has, fundamentally. Of course there are gray areas, FALMER(obviously), and over-gentrification hitting areas such as the North Laine, plus one too many penthouse for out of towners.

But generally, I think the past 7 years have been positive, with the Jubilee Street and Station Site's finally being redeveloped after over 20 years and the continued prosperity of the city.

If all the new developments in the offing were approved, I can only dream about the positive impact it would have to the city.

if the marina development happens as well as king alfred and the brighton eye i would say yes! but the city seems to have too many do gooders who seem to object to every planning application going!

Mate hardly anyone on this site has any interest in Brighon as a town or City but I think it has improved fro the better in the last 10 years

Parking is a real problem.

Agree with pretty much all of that as althigh we don't live there when we come to visit it's often very dirty, plastic bags full of rubbish etc, generally need a good lick of paint.

Also the Marina and King Alfred developments need to go ahead - places like the front at Portsmouth are much more appealing now.

People forget that there have been a fair few developments on the Marina this decade, such as the Hotel and that nice boardwalk by it.

London Road has got a lot worse.

West Pier was repairable ten years ago.

There were less bloody bus lanes.

Traffic was not as bad.


Other things have improved. Better or worse ... on the fence!

The Marina has improved, but I think this has been neutralised by the shocking developments of Asda, Fatty Arbuckles and the disgracefully ugly Bowling centre. The focal point of a marina should be the boats and elegant architecture, as opposed to crass buildings and concrete.

The rubbish problem does need to be sorted out!

I think the Marina was a disaster aesthically from day one...just look at the entrance. As Anthony Seldon described it on his future of Brighton book, it would have looked out of place in a Warsaw-Pact country during the Cold War.

London Road is one to watch I reckon...especially in regards to the two empty stores.

The demolition of the building that was replaced with that horrible sports soccer was equally bad too.

The entrance is fairly practical, but awful on the eye. It has such potential, but alas I do not think it will ever reach it. We can only dream that we could have something similar to Gunwharf Quays.

I think Black Rock will help shift the balance and perhaps the Marina will improve. The towers would be a great start.

I still can't believe the anston house alongside from Preston Park hasn't been demolished/redeveloped, it's in a nice area after all.

As I understand it, Anston properties keep getting inappropriate planning applications turned down for many of the residential blocks they own - seemingly most of London Road - and refuse to do anything with Anston House out of spite
