If you're thinking about excursions, I went to Pompeii last year, got the train down from Rome to Naples and then another to Pompeii.

Enjoyed it, but I did hear from a couple of New Zealanders I met that Herculaneum was a better bet. They reckoned the site was as absorbing, but the area less touristy (and the little town outside the ruins of old Pompeii is an absolute TIP).

Positano is great stayed there about 3yrs ago and did ravello and amlfi coast as well as Capri .. But as people have said earlier take the bus on the coastal tour .. you see more !!

Definitely do the Amalfi drive but also there is a boat trip to from Sorrento to Amalfi. Fantastic secenery and you get to swim off Capri on the way (I nearly drowned!)

Positano is beautiful, we had the best pizza ever there.

And Pompeii is very interesting but more impressive is Herculaneum. Much better preserved (and most of it is still uncovered).

Ischia is also worth a trip but i wasn't particularly impressed with capri - packed with tourists!

I stayed at the Imperial Tramontano hotel at Sorrento overlooking the Bay of Naples for Christmas 2005. I loved Sorrento and did the Amalfi Coast and went into Naples and on to Ravello. You have to be careful with your personal belongings in Naples, as you do in any big city, but it is certainly not a no go area. I understand it is very hot in August - mid 90s. Pompeii is well worth a visit - I didn't go to Herculaneum, but it's easily accessible and you can get there by train.

yes Dave, been many times ( I take the brochure photographs for a well known tour op specialising in Italy).

My advice is, stay in either Amalfi itself or Positano. They're nicer than Sorrento.

More important advice though

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES HIRE A CAR, THERE'S NO GAIN IN HAVING ONE, THE MOUNTAIN ROADS ARE TORTURE AND MORE IMP THERE WILL BE VERY FEW PLACES TO PARK YOUR CAR ONCE YOU ARRIVE AND YOUR HOTEL WILL CHARGE YOU TO USE THEIR GARAGE, and besides the bus that connects the whole of the Amalfi coast is regular and cheap, so theres no need to hire a car.

Also it can get very humid in the summer, but it is very beautiful, and there's no chavs.

im going to londonderry in a few weeks, much more exotic:cool:

Look out for the gallows on the city walls - lovely reminder of a nicer period in history :p and try to avoid saying the city name to anyone, cause you'll never guess which side they fall on ;) The city council/airport/etc all call it "Derry" though.

So are you going Dave? Sounds alright:thumbsup:

Yup...probably first or second week in August.

its either that or one or two weeks on Ocean Village going round Greece and up to Croatia.

decent hotel outside Sorrento is about 1500 for the two of us for a week....Ocean village is about 2500 for the two of us but its all in!!!

probably do the cruise next year when the Mortgage is paid off....but its our 25th this year so we would like to do something special.

A word of warning though, a lot of our party wanted to visit Naples. We were very strongly advised to give it a miss as it is a very very dodgy place to go safety wise. Bear in mind that this was 10 years ago and things may be different now.
I don't think it's quite THAT bad - we spent a weekend there about two years ago and it was OK, if a bit dull. There's just not much to see, massive churches aside, although the museum with a lot of the smuttier artefacts - statues of fauns with massive cocks, that sort of thing, from Pompeii was very good. Surprisingly, we struggled to find decent places to eat, which I didn't expect. Pompeii itself was magnificent though, although watching some junky basically dying at the train station was a bit unsavoury.
