And Legally Clubs can't fine anyone anyhow.

Fines still exist but fines tend to be an internally agreed procedure within clubs and fines tend to go towards Players Xmas Party.

A Club cannot Contravene Employment Law unless both parties agree to it.

Can they deduct a maximum of two weeks wages for major breaches of contract?

Yeah clubs can definitely fine players, and it was fairly well reported by reputable journos that Kane was being fined by Spurs for failing to turn up for training.

If you honestly believe he let this whole shitstorm happen for a week when he could’ve very quickly and easily defused it all days ago by commenting that he wasn’t due back in until Saturday, well, I have some magic beans to sell you.

This is in response to the post below as well as it should explain both

Fines still exist in "Name" but a Club cannot unilaterally take someone's contractual entitlement from them without the agreement of the player themselves agreeing to be fined. So it is often an internally agreed procedure.

Fines are very different from someone agreeing to give up on a portion of wages for hours not worked that they were contractually due to work.

As you can imagine. There are no set 40 hour week for footballers where if you only work 30 of those hours it would be easy to measure the fact that 10 hours were unworked so it would be easy for a Club to say " Your Contract says 40 hours. You only worked 30 hours. Consequently we are entitled to deduct 10 hours in wages.

There is at almost every Club though a " Code of Conduct " agreed between the Coaches and the players that they will accept fines internally for those infractions and what usually happens is someone collects all the fines throughout the year and then often all the players use that money for their Christmas Party night out.

The club's themselves used to deduct the the fines and keep the money years ago. However HMRC put the Kybosh on that because they argued that the deduction was made before the deduction of tax and NIC. That's why now one of the players or coaches collects it from the player direct from their net pay. That way there are no PAYE infractions.

All of that said above. If a player massively Breaches the Terms of their Contract then a Club can unilaterally terminate it but they cannot specifically decide on a particular punishment of their choosing without the player accepting it . Otherwise the Club would be breaking the terms of a Contract which could potentially allow the player to break it unilaterally. So their has to be a lot of " Goodwill " between both players and Clubs when it comes to fines/punishments

Well, depends who's side of the story you want to believe. He could quite easily have come out with this at the start of the week, but for some reason waited till last night after a 5 day shitstorm. Looks like a PR whitewash to me, from a player who is beginning to realise he ain't going nowhere.

And as for this "gentlemens agreement" bobbins to let him go - do me lemon. Kane is a multi-multi-multi million pound asset to Spurs. The very notion that Levy would leave his departure up in the air on some notional "verbal" (ie unprovable) contract is for the birds. Kane and whoever has been representing him have been very naive. The fact he publically declared he wanted his future sorted out before the Euros was laughable. AS IF.

Kane is just lucky that coincidentally his brother is also a top professional sports agent, well versed in representing elite football players. Imagine the mess Kane could find himself in if he wasn’t and Kane was employing him as his agent simply because he’s his brother.

Which he could’ve cleared up a week ago with a 2 minute statement. You think he intentionally let the whole shitstorm happen, turning a large chunk of Spurs support against him for what reason?

And the club fining him?

I'm sure this "Gentlemens agreement" is well documented in the fine print of the contract. I mean, no one would be stupid enough to want to leave but tie themselves to a lengthy contract without an agreed escape clause.

The circulation of the pictures of Charlie Kanes office with the associated motor bike with skid marks are possibly the tackiest images I've ever seen. Levy is known as one of the toughest negotiators in the league and they send in skid mark boy to talk his way out. Sorry Harry, You are staying at Spurs and winning nowt for another year.

Spurs could also have cleared it up and released a statement saying he was on holiday and wasn't due back yet.

Why should Kane have to justify being on holiday ?

The Press were the ones who started claiming he was refusing to train without any evidence that this was the case.

I have a rough idea why Spurs wouldn't want to pour piss on the fire by telling the Press he was on holiday. Harry Kane is at his optimum value at the moment. They want to sell him so it's in their interest to keep Man City interested. However the shit has hit the fan for them now. Not because of the media storm on this issue. But because In the interim Lionel Messi has become available on a Free Transfer.
