Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman has written to Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme calling for a women's race at the event.

Harman wants a women's race at next year's Tour, which starts in Leeds. British cyclist Emma Pooley was one of four riders who published a petition to resurrect the event, last held in 2009.

"After the success of the Olympics, women's cycling should not be allowed to slip back into the shadows," Harman wrote in her letter to Prudhomme.

Absolutely silly waste of time woman!

Waste of time how? It must be nice where you are in the 1950s, but to some of us, it's more than a little odd that the biggest annual sporting event in the world only has women on the podium to look pretty.

Le Tour is two full days in Yorkshire, before moving on to France.

The local area is in the process of planning 100 days of events leading up to the race-days.

Harriet frightens quite a lot of so-called men ...

If Harriet wants equality she should be asking Le Tour to allow women to compete in the competition against the men.

Maintaining gender apartheid in sport prevents the women from competing fairly against the men...............that's what the new wave of equality laws are demanding in board rooms, general industry, the military and the arts so that is what she should be agitating for in sport.

Why deny our women the opportunity to compete for the ultimate title?

I agree - it should happen...but it's far too late for next year surely and to
suggest that it can be put in place for next year is pure folly.

The year after maybe?

HH is never one to let a sound-bite or headline go by; but to be fair she has a point. Typical of her to make a song and dance about it rather than join an existing campaign though. Didn't there use to be a Women's race, but they knocked it on the head a few years back?

This would be proper equality - bring it on I say!!

She could always add her name to the 72,734 who have already signed the petition.

As could the rest of us.

72,734 signatures, that's quite a few.

However, the proof of the Tour for women will be how many of those bother to turn up and watch, 21 million on route for the men you said, how many will line the route to see the women? What figure will it make commercial sense, what amount of TV audience will make it pay?

It will not work.
