It should be noted that St Andrew wasn’t Scottish and St Patrick wasn't Irish. The patron saint doesn’t have to come from the country who adopts him; he just has to embody the values of that country, or one’s it would like.

We like fighting in England, so we chose a warrior saint.

Seemingly George would have caught more dragons if you used a fishing rod..

Happy St George's Day everyone. I always celebrate how great it is to be English, the fantastic athletes, the explorers, the innovators, the entrepreneurs, the artists .... all from varying backgrounds, with different faiths, or no faith, and one thing in common .... being English.

The sun is shinning, most of us can have a sneaky beer in the garden this afternoon to celebrate our national day and then there's you being a miserable git !

I wish I had a garden to do so. But we can do that every day.

My point is that if we want to celebrate something English why not have Shakespeare Day. Something relevant.

St George is a semi-mythical figure who apparently slayed dragons. Hardly the best starting point.

God hath given you one face, and you make yourself another ?

Hamlet, anyone ? I'll join anyone for drink to that. Virtually, of course.

We all know what today is ! Shakespeare's birthday ! (and the day he died) Kick that silly St George out. Let's get pissed and quote the bard.

You can blame King Edward II for making him patron saint of England. We share him with Aragon, Catalonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Germany, Greece, Moscow, Istanbul, Genoa and Venice (second to Saint Mark).

Quite right too. And a great excuse to post one of the more obscure World Cup football songs.

Plenty of English inventions name-checked in this.

A few not actually English (telephones and penicillin - Scottish, NHS - Welsh...), but the point still stands.

And a very young Lily Allen and an even younger Alfie 'Theon Greyjoy' Allen.
