I cycled to work this morning ( new job close enough to home ) for the first time in 20 odd years it was really nice to be able to do but will be so much nicer when its not bloody dark

mightily impressed with my new bike lights though. things have moved on a bit since sturmey archer dynamo and ever ready boat anchors.

Please tell me you're not one of those cyclists that have a zillion lumen strobe machine beaming down the road???

My monies on you to take Stat on your bike in a short sprint, what do ya think?

28th March on a Friday is the same length as 1st May on a Wednesday

MTSeagulls, does it get dark quickly? I noticed that in India, quite happily playing golf @ 6pm then all of a sudden darkness and mossies! their faders are defective!
Yes, there is no twilight as such. You notice the sun getting lower and then in 15 minutes it's dark.

Now, if it could just stay dry until I (hopefully) pass my driving test in May, that would be great. Not looking forward to the 20min walk to work in the pissing rain.

Tell me about it. I walk my dog at night along the coast footpath between Shoreham and Lancing. The tw@ts on their bikes with the super bright LED light are just blinding and I have to stop to get any vision back from being blinded.

Fortunately most riders don't have lights like that and some even put their hands over the light to dim it. But there's always 1 or 2.

Rant over.

I do the same walk and regularly blinded by the cyclists. Worst are the ones who keep it on strobe. I have to stop and wait for them to pass as I can’t see a thing.

A boffin at work told me today that he had calculated that the point at which the day stopped shortening and started lengthening was at about 4pm today.

It makes sense because days are either shortening or lengthening at different daily rates and there does come a moment when shortening/lengthening is zero on 2 occasions per year.

Today is the first time i've cycled in the dark . . Probably this century! My headlight is about 25-35w and lights up the patch about 10-15 feet in front of me. Similar to a Lambretta.

I could see pedestrians in the dark ahead, and slowed down accordingly, at one point there was a hero coming in the opposite direction with 2 knobjockey lasers, I had to slow down as I couldn't see where I was going in relation to him/her/it

Nothing wrong with my eyesight, night vision is good . . . I'm packing a jousting stick tomorrow.

er so short I missed it, re Lambrettas my lights got brighter the faster I went but never quite bright enough for the speed I was going! My eyes became very wide at 50mph..........

I suffered badly with it in the UK and would get very depressed over the winter months. Leaving work at 5pm in February and it still being light was always a big lift for me.
It improved a bit when living in Ireland as it's further west so would get around an hour extra light in the afternoon. This was offset a little by it not getting light until almost 9am.
I live in South America now and have a pretty even 12 hours of light and dark.
I kind of miss a little the very long summer nights of England but not that much.

I suffer the same, and am considering moving to SA. Which country do you live in and how do you find it? From the 12 hour days I assume you're near the equator, so I'd hazard a guess at Colombia, specifically Medellin or Bogota?

Hi, no I actually live in Brazil around 1100km north of Brasilia in the state of Tocantins. It's not exactly 12 hours a day but it only varies by around 50 minutes between winter and Summer.
PM if you wish to know more.
