The first day I look for in the calendar, the day when us workers can rest and take a brief break from the sweat and toil which is our labour.

Germany today is a public holiday, and in a special show of solidarity, I allowed the cleaner to switch her usual Wednesday slot to yesterday; she can now join in the celebrations.

Lay down your tools and have a wonderful day.

Zero hours unfortunately, but a hard fought for holiday enjoyed by many millions across the world.
There was a great US car sticker in my neighbourhood 'The Labor movement, the guys that gave us the weekend.'

Isnt it law that most workers are not allowed to work a bank holiday in Germany ?

Kind of, there’s the Ladenschlussgesetz which is a law which prohibits “retail stores” opening on Sundays and public holidays. This prohibits most, if not all, shops opening today. Most businesses, beyond retail, will be shut today though.
