Any Palace fans been on here yet trying to say he killed someone, as if a bunch of lads having a scrap in a pub weren't to blame? Clowns.

Amazing day in football history that one at Selhurst Park.

Of course it was, it happens every match, a fan hit over the head with a concrete block, then run over by the coach.
“ That’s for Cantona “

Yeah Cantona provoked someone into getting killed and it's all his fault. The bloke that provoked Cantona? A total irrelevance, obviously.

It's such a classic case of Crystal Palace brainwashing. Could never be their fault.

Paul Nixon RIP

It’s very sad that a Palace fan, Paul Nixon, died having been hit by a bus but this is an unconnected celebratory thread about Cantona bravely facing up to a hooligan racist degenerate moron and winning.

Perhaps start your own thread about Paul as it’s unfair to dampen the elation of those who are celebrating Cantona taking a stand against hate crime and taking out a truly nasty piece of work on that famous day 25 years ago. I’m sure many on here would pay their respects on an appropriate thread.

Ironically Simmons now 45 and lives in the Fulham area now attends games at Craven Cottage and occasionally watch CP, tells you everything ok need to know about Palace fans.

The above reported in the Times.

A reminder from the Independent of who exactly the good guy and the bad guy were that fateful day.

“Simmons, who had a previous conviction for a violent attack on a petrol pump attendant and was revealed to have attended British National Party rallies, was found guilty of threatening behaviour, fined £500 and banned from every football ground for 12 months. After the verdict he leapt over a table and attacked the prosecuting lawyer. He was sent to prison for seven days for contempt of court.”

How was/is Simmons viewed at Palace? Hero? Idiot? Embarrassment? Victim?

(This isn't a trick question and there’s no wrong answer. I’m genuinely interested.)

A idiot in my eyes. One more thing to add , in all my years of following palace that was the most toxic atmospheres I’ve ever encountered. We couldn’t get a drink and we’re ordered by the boys in blue to go straight to the ground as there’d been a incident. The walk to the ground was unpleasant to say the least with every comment cantona related.
I don’t expect any of you to give a damn but that’s what happened.

Simmonds was a ****.

Cantona was a **** for launching feet first into the stand.

The Salford mob who turned up at that Walsall pub ( Palace pub by agreement with landlord) and started on Palace fans, were even bigger *****.

There was never any grief with United fans up to that point, so for anyone to say Paul Nixon’s death wasnt related to that incident at Selhurst, is talking cobblers.
No Palace fan to my knowledge has defended Simmonds, and to all those saying he was reacting to racial abuse, I will counter that with would he have reacted the same way at Anfield, Maine Road, The Den, Stamford Bridge, Goodison Park or any other livelier grounds ?

Just to rub salt in the wounds, the Salford mob walked free from court.

Would you still celebrate it if it was against any other team ?

I somehow doubt it.

Personally I think it set the ball rolling and a fan lost his life whatever the ins and outs no fan of any club should lose his life over a game of football

No, just as no other football fan site other than BBS has multiple posts calling Lewis Dunk a rapist. Such banter is part and parcel of a rivalry.

Simmons was a mouthy git who wasn’t hurt, so is fair game.

The late Mr Nixon was killed, so you’ll see no unpleasant comments about that here.

Neither Cantona nor Simmons were involved in that tragedy. If it was inspired by the Cantona incident, then the attackers still bear 100% of the responsibility for it. Every other Man U fan saw that kick and didn’t feel the need to launch armed attacks on anyone.

Similarly, if I saw a Rambo film and decided to imitate the violence then it’s wouldn't be Sylvester Stallone’s fault.

Saying the attackers weren’t solely to blame is actually letting them off the hook.

To quote the great man, we’re just following the sardines.

Incidentally, instead of having another Boxing Day on the 26th, we’re having a Kung-Fu Day today. We really focus on Eric’s marital arts skills that he employed to defeat the hooligan albeit with a little regret as the kick was landed too low.

Anyway, happy Kung-Fu day Se20! Hope you have a good one!
