Happy Birthday to Henry Allingham!

The oldest UK (and Sussex) resident is 113 today bless him!

I believe he puts his longevity down to "Whiskey and Wild Women"! and I note from the press reports that he is getting a large bottle of rum as one of his presents.

I am sure that we all wish him well - wonder if he is an Albion supporter??

Its incredible to believe he is a year old than my granddad who died before I was born.

He was born not long after many of my great-grandparents, most of them died in the 60's and early 70's!!!

Yes he is one of only two British veterans of the Great War. There is or was one German, and he is or was Alsatian, born in what is now France.

I once thumbed a lift near Strasbourg from someone who told me his grandfather fought for the French in WW! and his great-uncle (his brother) for the Germans. They also speak a weird Franco-German dialect there.

Unbelievable to think of what he has seen in his life... can you imagine remembering a time before cars and tv's...he's been through wars, kings and depressions... I wonder what he thinks of all the things that we moan about these days...

I'm sure he's lovely old boy, but he's turned in to a publicity hog. Always in The Argus. Let's get D-Day done, then give us a break Henry.

He's the oldest person in Europe, don't see how you can begrudge him a few honorary degrees or outings to RAF jollies.

Better than that old biddy who died this week who was the oldest (only??) remaining survivor of the Titanic disaster. This constituted the leading news item on BBC South Today and took up approximately half the programme on the evening in question. She was nine months old at the time the Titanic sank, so it's not as though she even remembered it, but nonetheless milked it for all it was worth.

Henry Allingham has a far more interesting story, for my money.

Only Henry Allingham and Harry Patch (110) left as survivors of the Great War.
