Three favourite Wardy games for me; away at Millwall, he hadn't scored a league goal for about 10 games. Ball came to him with his back to goal, he chipped it up over the defender and volleyed it into the net. Probably weren't that many there to witness what a great goal it was.
Also Fulham away after Mullery had dropped him for a couple of games. Think we won 1-0 and Ward didn't score but if ever the saying of 'ripped them a new one' was apt, that game was it...he was untouchable.
Possibly the most amazing was the home game v Mansfield in div 3. We won 3-1 and there were a lot of press there as it was a top of the table clash. After he scored he decided that the rest of the game was a chance to see how many Mansfield players he could take on and beat. I remember listening to what was then the BBC radio 2 round up in the car on the way back. The guy at the game said, 'I'll summarise the game in two words, Peter Ward'' and left it at that.
Sometimes legends are exaggerated over time as the memory fails, but not Wardy.

Absolutely! Happy Birthday Wardy, you are entitled a bus pass and a senior rail card! And thanks for the magnificent memories, 1976/77 season was my favourite Albion season of all time.

My favourite Wardy memory was the mid-week game against Portsmouth, I think we won 4-0 or 4-1? I was standing next to Pompy fans and Brighton were struggling in the first half. They kept making loud derogatory comments about Perter Ward, generally taking the piss, when he did what he does and slotted in after bursting past their defence. In the middle of the most mouthy fan spouting off again Peter repeated the trick. This time his mate turn round and told him to shut up before he scores again! A great night finished by Mellors long range beauty.

I think that's probably balanced out by the fact that defending today is so much better. The defending in half those clips of Ward is dreadful, the likes of March and KLL would run riot through it.
I wasn't born when Ward was at his peak, if he was so good then why didn't he make it at a higher level? Someone suggested he'd be worth £50 million in today's game! That's not a dig, I'm just genuinely interested why he never went on to (much) better things.

He had his best years very young really.
Only in his early 20's at BHA in the late 70's.
Lots of potential that was sadly unfulfilled.
Still a Brighton legend though.

Back in the eraly 70s I was a young bloke who thought going to the Albion was a bit of a laugh. Then Mullery with Wardy, Horton, Sully, Lawrenson, Rollings, Foster, Mellor got into my soul and I've been hopelessly hooked. What a ****ing ride ever since. Nelse, Nogan, Zamora, Ulloa have all come close to the magic man, but none have toppled Wardy from the no.1 spot. Happy Birthday Peter Ward, my first football hero.
