Handcross Hill Roadwork Signs

I've noticed over the past few weeks that the signs for the end of the roadworks is getting further away from the final (yellow) average camera meaning that most cars are not sure when they can speed up to 70mph from the 40mph average. :flameboun

The first couple of times, I wasn't totally sure and kept to 40mph "just in case" until the actual end of roadwork sign.

Is it possible there could be a hidden average speed camera or the one that is on the opposite side of the road is in a similar position to the end of roadworks sign....could that conceivably monitor you?

I'm sure the sign is there for a reason. Why not just continue to do 40mph until you allowed to resume 70mph?

The clue is definitely in there somewhere. I'm pretty sure that legal speed restrictions in the UK are indicated by the signs, rather than the presence of a camera.

I would assume you remain at 40 until the road signs change to 70 and ignore the yellow cameras.

The 40MPH stretch was quite long enough already before extending in northbound by another half mile. I speed up to 70 as soon as I'm past the camera and just hope they haven't sneekily put another one in further along.

Can't figure out why they've extended it. That part is already three lanes so no need for road works there. Give us drivers a bloody break.

I think you need to worry whether they have a standard speed camera on that section.
If they do put one there, and you get clocked doing 70 in a 40, you can probably kiss your licence goodbye for a while.

I've been a road worker and we do appreciate motorists who stick to the limit.....it can be f***ing scary when all there is to separate us from speeding cars is a row of cones......i never speed as i know how vulnerable they can be

Fair enough, but in this particular case (on the additional half mile of 40mph limit) there are no road works, no road workers, just a temporary barrier inside the existing barrier resulting in narrower lanes.

Unless I see some work going on there pretty soon I will conclude that they're just being bloody minded.

I'm sure there is some good reason for it - low flying ducks or something. I do recommend everybody sticks to the limit there though as I have just finished my speed awareness course for that bit of road. There were 5 of us there caught at Handcross

Yep, and the reason is to remove more money from more motorists.

The very best thing to stick it to them would be for everyone to meticulously stick to the speed limits for a month, and not park illegally for a month, they'd be screwed. It's in the motorists hands, yet the motorist does nothing about it.

I noticed there were some new cameras where traffic joins at Handcross junction so assumed there must be new cameras further north of them, which there were.

Thought there was gonna be a pile up yesterday morning, as everyone sped up as they got to top of hill, then slammed on breaks as they saw the new cameras further up.

Do they take you average speed for the whole restricted area, or can you get done for being over 40 between 2 sets of cameras?
