Batteries are dangerous. Look how many Samsung phones caught fire. Make the battery pack 100 times bigger and any kind of crash is bad news.

He is a good driver though. All professional drivers make mistakes. If you drive fast for a long time when you inevitably have a crash you're always going to get hurt due to speeds involved. Thank God cars are designed to protect the driver. if this had been a programme in the 80's he would be dead.

You also can't rule out mechanical or electrical failure. It was a prototype car so maybe something went wrong with it. Could be as simple as a puncture on a tyre.

And yes, electric cars do burn very well. Think of all that energy stored on board. If the battery casing ruptures they burn like a firework.
