Yet another thing that someone doesn't like on NSC so has to raise the subject. Why?

I don't buy in to it because I don't have kids. So I ignore it. If you like it, then go and damn well indulge in it.

Because this is a forum on which to chat, isn't it?

To be fair when you judge this against how to wipe your 'arris, what your favourite Spice Girl is or what you had for lunch I'd say it has merit.

Halloween may be as old as the hills, but the commercialisation of it is relatively new and very unwelcome. I think Trick or Treating itself is the element that has probably come from America -they don't have Guy Fawkes night to celebrate after all. I put a notice up I my window that I don't do trick or treating - but hope you have a good evening - and that seems to work.

What I think is the worst thing about it is that it seems to have pretty much eclipsed all the fun of bonfire night (although obviously not in Lewes and other parts od Sussex, obviously!) but kids don't make guys and collect sacks of leaves and old bits of timber to make bonfires any more. So, no more bonfires with baked potatoes, just a few expensive fireworks, or more likely just going out to watch a commercial display.

Oh reading that brings back some memories and I really want a baked potato now :)

Agreed, hate the whole ethos surrounding Christmas, never is egotistical bollox more on show than this period of the year, judging people on what they give and receive. Unfortunately it is hammered into children from a very early age and from September....

I get my daughter to laugh at the adverts with me of say some new nerf gun or pretty pink unicorn set, when they have perfect children playing with these toys who are clearly way to old and should be hanging round the bus stop or skate park.........oh ive gone off on one....... sorry

I hate the adverts with all the happy families enjoying themselves, exchanging presents, mum looking immaculate cheerfully dishing up the dinner .... utter, utter BOLLUX

Oh yeah I forgot about that great British Tradition of burn a catholic night, that we have celebrated since early Britannic times..........

Yeh, absolutely! So .......are you going to take your soap box to the High Street in Lewes on November 5th. and explain to the local populace the error of their ways? Good luck with that - you may just find their pyromaniac proclivities can extend beyond just burning Catholics!

Lewes.... Nah, you can’t argue with middle class Champaigne socialists.

Sorry if it came across as I was on a soapbox, not my intention....
I just went off on one...

Gotta get my count up, before I retire from NSC

No worries - I didn't mean my response to suggest you were some sort of soap box warrior. Put it down as an attempt at humour which you didn't get!

Halloween has now become this over commercialised, over hyped import from over the pond. Why, oh why,do we keep involving ourselves with these stupid imports, since when did it become so important? It's crap, IMHO.

Miserable carmudgeon. Any excuse for a lark is worthwhile IMO. Especially if its a bit gothic....

In an age where we have an Uber Nanny State where everyone can get counselling for anything from child obesity to hair colour insecurity I find the idea of frightening wee kiddies with ghouls, ghosts, vampires etc a Massive laugh. Millions of pounds of Chinese kack in the shops, plastic which will be thrown into landfill....the list is long as to why it should be banned.

Bores the @rse of me.....

Over commercialisation at its worst. Quite possibly but ultimately you have the option to opt out if it's not your thing. Now in my early 50's Halloween barely raised a ripple when I was a kid and in fact bonfire night was more of an event.

Wonder how many 'poorer families' will spend money on Halloween tat in Tesco, get essential supplies from the food bank, and spend the evening drinking cheap lager and cider round the BBQ before watching Halloween 113 on Netflix?

They should be picking up grains from the granary floor, and tugging their forelock at me.

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
Anybody trick or treating here gets the hose turned on them.

Hallowen may not be American, but it's americanisation and over commercialisation has ruined it. What's wrong with a quick apple dunking?
