I remember when he took over and it was his first match at the Goldstone. Someone wrote something unfavourable about his appointment on the wall outside the ground. Cant recall exactly what it siad but thank god the author was proved to be wrong.

It was my soon-to-be (and now ex) father-in-law.

I was flying back from working in Australia on the morning of that game and whilst his daughter, my wife-to-be, was picking me up at LHR, he was doing some 'decorating' of The Goldstone whilst his other daughter kept watch.

The wording was:

"Gritt beleives Bellotti bullshit" (he got the spelling wrong - I'm just quoting it)

And, as we were playing Hull, who were also having 'owner issues', he painted some 'Fish Out' type slogans outside the away entrance in the South-East corner too.

So, the wording wasn't anti-Gritt per se - it was very much directed at the board.

I'd been away for 3 months and we'd not won a home game in all that time. Steve Gritt came in and changed all that. We beat Hull 3-0 that day and, I think, we went on to win every remaining home game that season, with the exception of the Orient 4-4 spectacle.

Steve Gritt did an amazing job at keeping the Albion in league and I can assure you the author of the writing to which you refer is as aware of that as anyone!

Thanks for posting. I suddenly don't feel as tense about tonight's match after reliving that one. I still want to jump up when Robbie slams that rebound in and still feel a bit sick when that Hereford striker goes through one-on-one with Ormerod at the end.

I think that rates as the most watched video on YT for me. Know most of the words off by heart.

NOTHING in football will ever eclipse the emotions of that period, capped off by Hereford. I don't care if we make it to the premier league etc... That day at Hereford will always hold the full gambit of emotions for me. Depression, elation, fear, loathing, love, pride and probably a little bit of all the other emotions you can think of. As I remember the biggest chorus at the end of the game wasn't for any of the players, the new owner Dick Knight or anyone else, it was for Stevie, Stevie Gritt.
The guy took over a team so low and dead and buried, and within a game, had turned them round to a team with belief and a cause. Without him, there would have been no Robbie Reinelt moment, we would have been sunk way before that. I can honestly say that he will always be a true legend to me.

I remember feeling very odd when Gritt was appointed. I thought he was the man for the job, but it was ironic that Bellotti was the man to have appointed him. A lot of Brighton fans were anti-Gritt to start with because he was perceived as Bellotti's man ... I actually made my one and only appearance on 606 (with Mellor!) to urge everyone to get behind him, regardless of their hatred for Bellotti. It did happen - probably not because of me though ...
