Tottenham have the players, but do they have the mentality? The baggage of throwing away the initiative in each of the last 2 seasons against Arsenal when going for 4th place is something that could haunt them again. They do have a habit of choking at the business end of the season, whereas once proper trophies were out of the equation last season, Arsenal played their best football.

Arsenal have used a clever tactic for the past few seasons to nab 4th spot - get knocked out of all the cups so every other club is playing two games a week for the run-in and Arsenal only play one.

Tottenham were in the same boat last season though as Leeds knocked them out of the FA Cup one round before Arsenal lost to Blackburn, and I don't recall their Europa League run lasting that much longer after Arsenal had been eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

It's not an overreaction to say Arsenal, realistically, need 5 starting players to join before the window closes.

Let's get this right, they have a very good team. You can't consistantly get 4th and be rubbish, it's just not possible in a league format.

However, 5 teams around them have stepped up a gear or remained competeitve. United will always compete, Man City and Chelsea have BEAUTIFUL squads now. Spurs have real quality and Liverpool are improving slowly.

Arsenal should really be fielding a team of

New keeper
Gibbs
New Centre back
Koscielny
Sagna/ New right back

New defensive midfielder

Walcott
Cazorla
Wilshire

New striker (although, I think Giroud can score a fair few this season).

Worrying.

This is what Arsenal face on Wednesday night in Fenerbache
Good luck with that one then :)

Is that what some people refer to as cringeworthy, or embarrassing?

the thing is they have let 27 players go this window and have also got alot of injuries, their squad is so bleak at the moment, i dont think they are gonna be able to compete for the whole season and not tire out, even with their current squad without the injuries.

I think there's a difference between what they'd need to finish top 4 and what they'd need to go higher. A 20 goal a season striker and a defensive midfielder is what they need to address first because if you add a striker with 20 goals in them to a team that already has Walcott and Cazorla who should each get 12-15 goals, plus a squad that has Giroud who should also come in and get into double figures, then they should be able to score enough goals to outscore opponents more often than not. A defensive midfielder will give their suspect defence some protection.

They do need to get a top drawer goalkeeper if they want to get any higher than 4th and given that Julio Cesar is available on a free transfer (but with big wages) he might be worth going for. It's surprising they didn't go for Stekelenburg seeing as how Fulham ended up buying him for peanuts. Someone with some more pace to partner Koscielny is needed in the centre of their defence, but bringing in a solid defensive midfielder would mean their defence would be less exposed in the short term.

The guy's passion about his club is brilliant, hes pretty much spot on to.

Soooo, bearing in mind Arsenal are 3-0 up and crusing – in a game that most people thought they didn't stand a chance (and some thought might be Wenger's last), any chance of getting this mug back on to offer us his insights?

Really professional performance from Arsenal tonight. They still need 4-5 signings though.

This performance only covers over the cracks... until at least the weekend for Wenger.... Unless they're happy with finishing 6th and winning nothing again of course.

Tonight's result is papering over the cracks against a woefully poor Turkish team

They weren't deemed to be woefully poor, 2 hours ago.

I heard quite a few media reports before the game that they were a poor side lacking confidence at the moment,
And now Paul Merson has just confirmed a very very poor side on sky sports and tonight's result is papering over the cracks

My point exactly, SB.

In fact, I thought it was Arsenal that were a "woefully poor" English team.

3-0, away from home, against Fenebache. I don't think ANYONE expected that from the Gooners tonight. In fact, Mr Soprano, I refer you to your own post in this thread, #4... "Good luck with that"?

That was referring to the supposedly 12th man the Fenerbache ultras but even their extreme vocal support couldn't drive their useless team on to at least a draw
Arsenal played ok against an awful Fenerbache team

You can only beat the team you're playing and they seem to have managed that quite well. They may not win the league but the hysteria and bollocks that was spouted by the media and fans after ONE game is just laughable.

They should be proud of themselves for their fiery and purposeful performance tonight. Turning Turkish faces sour must have been a plus. Proving people wrong shouldn't be restricted to just one game. A few signings to go with this spirit could see them ok. Some work to do though.

True, people forget Arsenal had a brilliant end of season to finish 4th but I think the problem is Arsenal fans expected them to push on from that this year, and when the season tickets went on sale the club came out and said we've got a £70M warchest but nothing has materialised again and it was made worse by a massive clear out of squad players

Again, kinda the point I was trying to make. The media normally have an 'angle' every PL weekend to string out a 'big' story from one of the games for a couple of days afterwards. In the absence of any freak result* they went – unsurprisingly – with the "Arsenal implode" story. It was an easy opportunity for anybody that thinks they have a clue to say "Oh look, Arsenal haven't spent any money, and look how gash they are". Doesn't technically make it true, however many people say it.

The funny thing is, if they string a few more results together, the Villa game probably won't get another mention all season; which is funny because that most 'pundits' haven't shut up about it since Saturday.

* Given that Chelsea seemed to have got a bit of luck tonight in their win against Villa, I don't class the Arsenal result as the shock scoreline that a lot of people believe it to be. They actually look like a half decent side...
