Tricky one this as distorting history is wrong but it is now an offensive word.
Don't really see it as an offensive word,it's no different to them calling whites "Honky". Well coincidence,as writing this Peter Sellers is on TV in Being There and he has just used the word "Honky" twice.Since when do names hurt. You are definately right about distorting history though.

It's part of history. Embrace it, don't dumb it down.. But as previously pointed out this debate has been done to death on other threads. Time to stop PSB starting threads I think, too much of a troll.

ITV have muted the N word when showing the film since 1999 , Channel 4 have shown the American cut in which the dogs name has been dubbed to "Trigger".

The word '******' is actually a distortion of the word 'Negro'. That word comes from the word 'Niger' meaning Black. It comes from America originally and wasn't seen as offensive until the sixties where racist White politicians would use the word as an out and out derogatory term when discussing emancipation for African Americans. Guy Gibson named his dog thanks to it being a black Labrador, it was not intended to be in any way racist. It's worth noting that whilst there weren't many people of African extraction living in Britain at the time the great singer Paul Robson, when he was on tour in this country in the thirties was not allowed to eat in the hotel restaurant, he had to eat his meals in the kitchen. Despite that unsavoury fact Robes actually moved his family to Britain in 1928 and remained here until 1939.

250 years ago there was a British Black population of around 20,000 , 75% living in London and the majority of the remainder living in port towns such as Bristol , Cardiff and Liverpool.

****** wont be used esp because it was a code name used when the dams were blown a main part of the film.
Therefore resulting in a bunch of middle class white men jumping around shouting ******.

I'd imagine this wouldn't be a problem for the majority but I only takes one person/group to pick up on it and use it for there own gains, to ruin the whole story.

Plus, as for the remake, apparently so much more of the story is now available due to the 50 year (?) Official Secrets Act thingy!.

My Aunt Thelma Orr was editor of the original Dambuster movie and imho there is no need to remake it but should they decide to then imho the historical fact that the dog was called ****** should remain as such or do we have to have war movies where the British or American soldiers have to refer to their enemies as ' those badly behaved German fellows' or Krauts or the Hun etc or Japanese as ' those cruel oriental chaps' or Japs, Nips etc etc . Where please will all this end. I find , for example Celebrity Juice hilarious but the pc brigade do not make issue of that show with its content which is strictly offensive, women effing and blinding, references constantly to anal sex etc etc. To me imho if it was watered down it would not have the same impact and is of our times so imho history in film or any other medium should not be watered down either. In addition when my parents were married in 1955 in the newspaper cutting it mentions that my nan ' brides mother' wore a ****** brown outfit !
I therefore add an uncensored clip dedicated to ****** the dog.
ooooops sorry it will not play on here but will on youtube QgePE07GUte

If you're so convinced it's just "PC gone mad", why did you name this thread "Guy Gibson's dog", instead of just using his name? Where are your principles now?

Because even your tiny brain tells you it's considered offensive, that's why.

Case proven, you see?

I named the thread Guy Gibson's dog because the dog belonged to Guy Gibson. Try and work it out if you can.

Of course, the daftest thing is not that they change the dog's name from ****** to Digger to appease the PC brigade, but that they feel the need to remake the film at all. If they're goiing to be PC, then I jolly well hope they don't show any of those splendid clean living chaps who won the war for us puffing on cigarettes!

But why not just say "****** the Dog"?

Do you see the point here? You know damn well it will cause offence, so you didn't use it, despite your transparent claim not to understand.

As long as everyone's sensible and educated about the words use then I think it should be used. It'd be a shame to ignore the bits of history we aren't comfortable with today, when all we need to do is put it into historical context.

"******" itself is not racist, it is how people use it that makes it racist. It is, after all, just a word.
