I actually agree with your criticism of me!

I think Poyet has something going on in the background, but can't quite bring myself to believe it. I really he can pull it off, because so far I have been impressed with is approach to running the club.

I can totally understand your cautious view of it though, seeing how we've usually gone about doing transfers over the last few years.

I just get the feeling Poyet is a really active and dynamic manager. Hope so.

What is interesting is that wasn't Poyet on record about saying that there may be no need to bring in new players in the transfer window - it would be up to the players to show him it wasn't necessary?

Well he's obviously seen enough to change round on that view!

Perhaps just as important as who we bring in, is who we can get rid of - we have so many players doing nothing but eating up the wage bill that it must reduce the budget we have to spend on new players.

For what it is worth, I'd like to see:

- Right back - while Whing works hard and tackles well, to play the kind of passing game Poyet wants requires full backs comfortable on the ball. That is not Whing's speciality.

- Centre back - must be experienced, possible captain?

- Left midfielder - like many others on here I hate seeing a central midfielder playing wide midfield, but what are the other options we have? Cox? Poyet must have seen enough of him in the Norwich game as he contributed badly for at least one goal, since then he has been barely seen. McLeod - Poyet has seen enough of him! Hart - unlikely to be technically good enough for the manager's tastes. Ermm, that's it really.

What is not clear is how old his comments are that the article talks about.

He had said the same thing at the time you are refering to. He said then that IF he needed players in January, he wanted them on the 1st and not the end. (Obviously knows all about Dick Tights way of working in the past! )

Forward planning ...and ..transfer window ...not two phrases associated with the Albion ...

How can you say that?

The only thing was that Tight always expected good players to come for low wages on a free transfer, and when he was always unlucky, we ended up with something at the last moment - just to keep the fans quiet! :nono:

Whatever people, even Gus, may want, the reality is that most transfers are part of a chain and tend to be completed at the end of the month.

Players looking to move will, no doubt, weigh up the various offers. Clubs may not want to release players until they have replacements and some clubs that have little money to spend may then make a big sale and that will change their budget plans.

All this talk of us having £millions to spend does not help either as any club/player/agent who thinks we have mega-bucks will up their demands.

Showed his inexperience as a manager then by assuming we'd have new signings by start of Jan. I just read the quote in the Argus (from the Almanac) on December 4th:

"..we will see if we have to bring anybody in or not. That would have to be for 2nd January. I don't want to wait until the end of January to bring someone. If that happened that would mean something bad has happened in the middle of January so you need to bring one just as an emergency, but, if not, the players coming in I am looking to bring here in the first week of January."

Quite frankly its neither the first nor last time we'll been promised something but not had delivered in the transfer window.
