Gus: Two new faces hopefully by next Saturday

Gus Poyet was left rueing an afternoon of mistakes, both by his players and the officials, as he watched his side twice surrender the lead to Rochdale at Withdean.

In an entertaining second half, Albion went ahead two minutes after the break, but Poyet was left fuming in the 51st minute, after Gordon Greer was sent off for shoving Anthony Elding, and referee Danny McDermid awarded the visitors a penalty.

Poyet refused to defend his skipper's actions, but did question the decision to award Rochdale a penalty, which Gary Jones scored from the spot.

He said, "The referee did not have a clue if the ball was in play or not. The fact is that the ball was not in play when the incident took place, and the referee gave a penalty.

"I asked the linesman and he didn't know either. That is the worst part. Mistakes happen, but they did not know. It is clear cut: it was not a penalty.

"If that was a player he might be missing three or four games, but it's not and he'll referee a game next week. If you leave him out for a game he might learn from it."

Poyet still felt his side should have won the game, despite the poor officiating, after Elliott Bennett restored Albion's lead after 67 minutes, but a mix up between Tommy Elphick and Casper Ankergren, and a weak punch from the latter presented Jones with the chance to level.

"We deserved to win - even with ten men - but if we are going to give goals away so cheaply we don't deserve to win.

"We had more chances, more shots, more corners and if it was boxing we would have won on an unanimous points decision - but we gave two goals away and that is why we drew the game."

Poyet, already targeting four new faces ahead of today's game, may also have to add a centre-half to his list of targets, as Greer will be absent for three matches; and hopes to have two new faces ahead of next Saturday's trip to Sheffield Wednesday.

"He's come in from a suspension so he needs to be careful. We have a code of conduct which is clear, and we will deal with the situation internally and we may have to look at bringing in an extra defender now."
