Didn't they lose in the 1992(?) FA Cup Final to Liverpool? Got presented with the winners medals after losing as well or something along those lines.
I think you're right. I recall Johnny Byrne played, the season after he left us.

It's also interesting because there's no reference to the circumstances surrounding his departure. Given his ego I can only assume he's been gagged on that good and proper.
I'd give Gus 9 out of 10 for that effort - I would have left out the bit about not conceding to Chelsea because, in the grand scheme of things, when people look back on Gus's tenure they won't be saying "Do you remember that time when Sunderland kept a clean sheet against Chelsea?" Otherwise, word-perfect.

I reckon he had to put something in for this season and that was literally the best he could come up with.
It's been a disastrous season for both them and him.
The FACTS are he kept them up last season which was a miracle

He took over with SEVEN matches gone, not twenty seven. You have an extremely generous definition of 'miracle'.

Far more down to Connor Wickham in that bizarre spell in the second half of April I'd have thought:
- CW 2 goals in unlikely 2-2 away draw at Man City on16th April
- CW goal in unlikely 2-1 away win at Chelsea on 19th April
- CW 2 goals in confidence-up 4-0 home win v Cardiff on 27th April
Make no mistake, THAT was the 10 day spell that saved Poyet's worthless hide and masked the underlying failure for another season. And it was all down to Connor Wickham.
Gus must take credit for coaching him to produce that performance, shirley. ??
They're still outside the relegation zone which is 4 places higher, than when he joined them.
