Here's a thought - maybe people are completely blowing this out of all proportion. What did you expect Gus to say? "Yeah we can splash out on a striker actually". Despite wanting to intimately know about the inner workings of our club, I'm afraid no one on here has a f***ing clue, despite thinking that they do.

Correct. And why wouldn't Gus play down his budget as we approach what most pundits regard as being the critical time for transfers/long term loan deals. But it is interesting to see how many people equate "free transfer" with "no cost to the club". I've just been trying to point out that there are significant costs associated with signing even a 'free' transfer.

Gus shouldn't of got rid of 3 strikers unless he knew he was able to get one back in by the beginning of the season. If this was any other manager you lot would be straight on to him.

That's fair enough yeah, of course its important to remember the costs that sometimes don't get mentioned. Just all too often on here some Argus report is put up to scare everyone (this is especially interesting as normally the Argus is slagged off to the back teeth). From this we get conspiracy theories about Bloom not having money or lying about the transfer budget? The whole thing just breeds negativity and insecurity and quite frankly, we would be far better off without it.

I take your point, but the new stadium is obviously the most important thing at the moment.
I think many of us,myself included, somehow got the impression that there would be more cash available for transfers than there actually appears to be and our thoughts for promotion naturally increased at the same time.
At the time of posting, promotion this season is looking a bit of a big ask. However,we may get in some more players before D Day and that will all change! Our expectations for this season have certainly been 'managed down' by the club since Tony's desire/expectation of automatic promotion expressed sometime ago.I reckon this has all left many of us a bit bemused and a incy wincy bit disappointed on the transfer front.
If anyone has not read the Swiss article,I suggest they do...it certainly makes for sober reading and goes a long way to explaining our current position.
I am sure the club has a great future, but getting where we want to be may take a bit longer than we may have thought.
On a bright note,I went past the Stadium last Sunday and stopped ,had a good look.....MAGNIFICENT!
Sorry i maybe in a minority here but i did read that Swss artical. It's nothing new that most fans don't already know.
Yes the club has been carrying debts for decades but that's history.
You don't pump 93 million pounds into a club and still worry about old debts.Bloom has taken control now and has cleared the debts/interests/loans and whatever else.
Yes the club has to pay all this back but with no real time frame or interest.
I'm sorry but i don't buy this skint tag no more when a mulit millionaire has taken over.We have moved on from that.If the club was really in dire straights would bloom take a huge risk with his wealth when this club probably won't make a profit for a few years yet?
I'm convinced Bloom is worth far more then people relise on here.

I have no worries with this as it was what I expected. Always thought we'd be around the top ten at best because we didnt have that much to spend. It makes no sense to splash out until Falmer is at full throttle.

So no worries... still hoping maybe for the play-offs and the money we mişght get from that.

As for Bloom's comment .... he loves the club and he understands spin.... no worries

Why did we spend 1m last year then looking at those figures ? Also previously mentioned is the 10% increase

To be honest if Poyet isn't being backed then I think he'll walk

Hopefully all mind games and a few signings coming up though

That man did not sign a four year contract without somethings being in place. Let's see what shakes out between now and end August.

Gus is ambitious and I don't think south American blood is patient.

Tony Bloom is no fool.

I don't think Gus would have committed to a 4 year deal knowing that he has got pennies to spend in the transfer market.

I believe mind games are being played big time here.

It's possible that the big money will be available next pre-season and we are prepared to tread water this year relying on the loan market to maybe fire us to a play off spot or a holding position of a top ten place.

I really wish he hadn't said that, no need and can and has only lead to a load of people that were already moaning to moan some more.

All the free transfers would have cost us signing on fees.

Not necessarily and those costing a transfer fee may well receive signing on fee's too, there are hidden costs, but disclosed transfer fees are likely to represent an overall greater spend.

Are we not as well off as we thought?
Are the players we signed wages, signing on fees and agents really high?
Are we just playing mind games to get our targets cheaper because teams think we are minted?

Ans.
Hopefully we are playing mind games with other clubs and agents!

If that's the case it doesn't explain this...

Slade signings

Smith Free
Bennett 200k
Tunni 125k?
Wright 125k?
Nav Free
Dicker 25k(loan) then Free
Mark Wright Free
Dickinson 150k-250k?
Crofty Free

I can't think of anymore.So there's 9 new players

spent £600k-750k roughly

Sales None

Poyet

Peter Brezovan - Free
Cristian Baz - Free
Augustin Battipiedi - Free
Marcos Painter - Free
Inigo Calderon - Free
Matthew Sparrow - Free
Radostin Kishishev - Free
Casper Ankergren - Free
Michael Poke - Free
Ashley Barnes - Undisclosed £100,000?
Gordon Greer - £250,000

Spent £350k

Sales £450K

Profit 100k?

So Gus brought in 11 new players.Spent less money then Slade and made a small profit. Also his budget was increased by 10% compared to Slade's and yet we only hve 30% left?

The title of this thread is HUGELY misleading.
He has said he has 30% of his budget left - NOT transfer budget.
The budget will include the wages of all the squad coaches etc, etc.
We have signed a number of players and are paying wages for approx 23 players + coaches etc. Despite this we still have 30% of our overall budget left - No need to panic in my book.
Assuming (and this figure is just off the top of my head) we have allocated £2 million so far to signings, signing on fees etc + the wages of the entire squad etc - this would mean we still have nearly a million left to spend.
As no-one knows what the overall budget is - knowing we have 30% left means very little

I reckon we might do a double loan deal for Lua Lua and Nile Ranger from Newcastle

That wont happen as Ranger is 3rd choice striker at Newcastle and unless they get someone in, is expected to play

Gordon Greer signed because he felt this club was going places and could at least achieve what Swindon did last year.

How did he come to this conclusion?

Did he look at our squad and think WOW they have got some unbelievable players there?
Err, no, i dont think so.

Did he listen to what Tony Bloom and Gus Poyet said to him about their plans to take Brighton forward and think, hell yeah i wanna be a part of that?
Yes, probably.

The same can be said for Matt Sparrow who could no doubt have gone to a Championship side or one of the other League 1 sides.

These players signed because they know what progression is expected for Brighton this season and if they have been lied to just to get them in, they will soon be unhappy and handing in transfer requests.

Unfortunately the football world talks, and agents will be asking more for players when they hear Brighton are interested as will clubs, so Gus releases a story to the media in the week that will probably be the busiest of the transfer window declaring that he hasnt much of his budget left and that he still needs 4 or 5 players.
Coincidence? Not a chance!

However as TRHK pointed out "free transfers" are anything but free and can be quite expensive so everyone that is expecting a million pound striker really need to wake up and smell the coffee, if we get 4 free transfers in this week then we may well have spent over half a million pounds on those bargains!
