Gus Poyet - right or wrong?

He believes that his friend Luis Suarez didn't racially abuse Patrice Evra and that Evra should not have gone "crying like a baby" to the FA afterwards

We had a pretty damning verdict on Blatter on that other thread about racism, so time to open up and include Gus in things seeing as this has popped up on The Guardian site

Gus Poyet accuses Patrice Evra of 'crying like a baby' in racism case | Football | guardian.co.uk

I heard Gus on talksport, as far as I heard he didnt say that Suarez didn't use a racist word, just saying he is not a racist.
Although a different case, Ron Atkinson said he was not a racist he just used a racist word.
Gus said that word was commonplace in South America, BUT if Suarez didn't think it was a bad word, then why was he trying to wind Evra up by using that word!

Gus has stuck up for a mate and gives his opinion on a colloquial word that is considered racist in the UK but is a term of endearment and positivity in South America. Gus is exercising his right to free speech and giving an explanation which is being taken further out of context and twisted to suit the media agenda. The problem is tomorrow when there are monkey chants at St Marys directed at him is will he report it as racial abuse ?

As expected Alex Ferguson has said Gus Poyet is wrong in his comments, although he understands him protecting a fellow countryman. Pretty restrained from Sir Alex! Probably under some sort of FA guidelines.

Or perhaps he just is jaded through experience of the press and knows not to automatically take the sensationalist view of comments (unless of course it helps him with mind games for an upcoming rival).

Ronaldo isn't anywhere as bad as Suarez.

I imagine that is something most United fans would say. Liverpool fans on the other hand...

I would say they are as bad as each other.

I had hoped, after catching a brief glimpse of the story on the back of The Mirror that it would Gus stating that he felt that a 'Cry Wolf' environment might become prevalent in football (which is touched upon in the article). That bit about putting up with it for seven years in Spain so others should too is really not on though, sad to see Gus come out with that.

How can you disagree with him being a cheat when he was serving a 7 game ban for biting an opponent when Liverpool signed him?

To be fair, with those teeth, a quick stumble and he's likely to take a chunk out of someone

*edit* I should add that i am not inherantly dentalist and it was a one off remark

I know some fans referred to him as looking like a monkey on the the echo website, but I doubt there will be chants. If there are, the club can complain, and gus can just provide evidence, if asked. It's not hypocritical, he isn't complaining, he is just telling the investigators what he heard/experienced. He can even play it down in the press, and just allow any investigation to run in the background.

Hampshire Police have already said they will be on the lookout for fans making homophobic taunts and slurs so no doubt there will be a lot of plain clothes and off duty police officers in the crowd.

Having watched Dalglish's press conference yesterday and heard Ferguson's comments today, Gus has a lot to learn before he goes near a 'top' job.

Its time the world moved on from this racism rubbish, who cares if your called a white honkey or a booner.I bet most cultures couldn't give a shite what they are called, the fact that its easy to make money out of discrimination doesn't help the situation.

Next it will be against the law to call someone a ginger minger.

I don't think Ronaldo dives as much as Suarez, although I admit most people would think he does. I may be biased, but I always try to be as impartial as possible.

Suarez's cheating doesn't stop at diving though. I know Ronaldo got sent off for 'headbutting' against Pompey, but that was pretty innocuous. Suarez has been banned for biting(!), he kicked Michael Dawson, he handballed the ball on the line against Uruguay. That's just from the top of my head, I'm sure there's plenty of other stuff. As I said, I watched Liverpool's 0-0 draw with whoever it was the other week and Suarez's antics were absurd. A quick look at wiki and it shows some other stuff:

"Suárez scored goals for Groningen, but he also had disciplinary problems; in one five-game stretch in January 2007, he scored four goals but received three yellow cards and one red card."

"During the 2008–09 season, Ajax coach Marco van Basten noted how Suárez played an important role in many of Ajax’s goals, but van Basten was also upset by the number of yellow cards Suárez received.[2] Suárez was suspended for a game[19] because he was given his seventh yellow card of the season against Utrecht in a 2–0 win.[20] He was also suspended after a halftime altercation with teammate Albert Luque over a free kick.".

I have a hard time believing that all those cards were simply because he was a poor tackler. Those cases aren't specifically cheating (they could be) but it sums up his character.

I think if you watched 5 matches that Suarez has played in and 5 matches that Ronaldo's played in, you'll see much more cheating and generally unsportsmanlike behaviour from the Uruguayan. Other than Neymar, I can't think of anyone even close to him in the game.

From Sporting Life:

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has condemned the criticism of Patrice Evra by his Brighton counterpart Gus Poyet, accusing the Uruguayan of being "a bit silly" with his observations about the race row involving countryman Luis Suarez.

The Football Association have charged Liverpool striker Suarez with making racist comments to Evra at Anfield last month.

Liverpool have already stated their intention to stand behind their man, who has insisted he has done nothing wrong.

Ferguson has noted comments being "drip fed" by the Merseyside giants, in direct contravention of the FA's request for both clubs not to comment.

However, the Scot reserved his greatest criticism for Poyet, who has accused Evra of "crying like a baby" over the matter and followed up with the claim he would defend Suarez "to the hilt".

"Gus Poyet's remarks are inappropriate at this time," said Ferguson.

"People throughout the world are condemning racism. He has chosen the wrong time.

"I can understand why he wants to support someone from his country but he has to think about it more.

"I don't know how the question has been loaded but it seems his criticism of Evra is a bit silly.

"We have been asked by the FA not to say anything about the Evra situation. We have abided by that," Ferguson added.

"Liverpool have been drip-feeding a lot of stuff out over the last couple of weeks. But the FA will deal with it."

Oh well, look on the bright side - at least he knows who Gus is. I can't remember Martin Hinshelwood ever being blasted by Fergie.

I think Gus has opened a can of worms here and if you agree with his comments or not he may have to do a "Sepp" and clarify his thoughts. Not good IMO he has cast judgement on a fellow profesional (Evra) before all the facts have surfaced and a judgement has been made. What if it is found that Evra was abused in a way even Gus would not agree with, will he apologise to him and the "Kick it out " campaign?
Not good Gus ......sorry
