Too many years and missed opportunities have slipped by for Gus to make it back to the Premier League l fear. Indeed if he were ever to get a gig as manager of a team in this country now l fear it would have to be by doing it the hard way, and virtually starting again at a club further down the Football League, and is he prepared to do that? I have my doubts.

As others have said though, l love Gus, and we had some marvellous times with him at the football club. I also sincerely believe that if it wasn't for him laying down the foundations, then we probably wouldn't be in the Premier League today.

Not entirely his fault - Ken Brown who was CEO at the time put in place a stupid rigid budget that prevented us seriously being able to keep Murray

That can't be wholly right can it ? The budget was there for CMS. That would have easily accommodated what were apparently not a massive shortfall in our offer to Murray,

There was a pot of money for transfers and a pot of money for contracts. Apparently they were not interchangeable - so that £3.5M fee for CMS couldn’t be used for wages ….

I think a massive personality clash and a moving of the goal posts in his influence at the club is the most likely reason for Poyet’s implosion at the end of that season. Whilst seeing his faults I do have some sympathy with Gus after listening to the interview.

I've always believed in the cock-up theory of history rather than conspiracy, so I assume that TB didn't realise how much of a clash there had been between Barber and Poyet at Tottenham. But as soon as Barber came in, there was always going to be trouble with Gus.

Just imagine if you went to work for a new company and then they brought in the person you disliked most at your previous employers. That was probably how Gus felt.

That was Gus's interpretation. IIRC wasn't there an alternate one that Gus didn't think Glenn was worth doubling his wage for, but after all this time who knows

It was great fun at the time, but I think one of the reasons TB bought in Paul Barber was because he didn't want to try and manage the club and Gus himself and it was always going to blow up at some point, it was just a matter of when.

As far as Gus never having been invited back to the Amex, I don't tend to go to the pub with people I've sacked for Gross misconduct

Ken Brown was sacked with immediate effect later on, but always seems to escape the criticism, apart from all the concourse sales to get rid of excessive stock.

For all his attributes I suggest once you fall out with TB you cease to exist.

Saw an interview with TB in which he said his only regret since taking over the club, was the way things ended with Gus, and that he would do it differently if he could go back, and was not short on praise for how good Gus had been for the club.

So why not invite him back for a game then?

My guess is that Tony is aware that others at the club may not be as willing to have him back in the stadium, why piss off PB to make a gesture to Gus?

Was Gus "a problem" before Barber arrived? I have no recollection that he was but the memory fades.

Hmmm the relationship, (or total lack of one), between PB and Gus going back to their years at Spurs together, was one of the biggest problems though.

At a conservative estimate, CMS would have come in on about triple Murray’s salary at the time. The money was absolutely there to keep Glenn, if the will had been there.

Yep.

Indeed, TB has since admitted that he liked Glenn and would like to have kept him, saying that as Gus was the manager he thought it was better to leave the decision in his hands being the manager of the club, and thinking that we would know better.

Indeed; absolutely bizarre that some Albion fans seem to think that Murray left due to an imposed budget issue, rather than the fact that Poyet ultimately wasn't particularly bothered about keeping him.

Yet CMS said Leicester offered higher wages than us, but he chose Brighton.

In hindsight it was a terrible decision to let Muzza go and bring in CMS.

At the time? I probably thought the same tbh but it's easy to say now.
