Regarding the "very decent budget", you're guessing, aren't you?

We've been told that, all in, (wages and transfers) we're about 16th in the table. And we know that Tony wanted playoffs, if possible. So no, the budget didn't quite match the ambition, thus Gus asking for more.

How does Gus know where we are in the Budget comparisons? Do all the managers get together after games and compare notes. That was a complete throw away comment imo. I dont disagree that we are probably a lower wage payer but why keep publicly banging on about the need to spend more money? Must do wonders for the current squads morale!

Of course we need to build over time, and continue to invest to get to where we want to be, but always publicly going on about Money, when he has been given a very decent budget, is a bit crass imo. Is it some sort of public blackmail to Tony Bloom? Give me money or I'm likely to be off or cant deliver improvement? It would piss me off. The fact we were in the Play Offs 4 games ago, and team selections are almost largely responsible for us no longer being there is not about money. I agree we do need to spend some more but how much did Ian Holloway spend at Blackpool?

I see your point about it being perceived about holding a gun to Tony's head, but I think it's more about telling people - 'please adjust your expectations'. He doesn't talk figures, he's answering a direct question where he's broadly responding by asking for boardroom support.

Comparing other teams (like Blackpool) misses the point. Holloway is an experienced manager. He had a few years of squad-building behind him. He didn't have crazy expectations placed upon him. And he is a bit mental.

The thing about being in a play-off position four games ago isn't the issue, for me. To say it was a false position isn't quite right, but Gus himself was relaxed about it - knowing that "yes, we've got a chance, and please don't EXPECT us to be there". We've since played two of the top three teams, and fallen short. Next season, with the right support, that falling short won't happen again.

Any manager doing his job will know various players' salary expectations. They have to.

To be fair to Gus, the interview was 32 minutes long. Most of it was about having realistic ambitions, the players abilities, the continuing progress, the frailties we have, Vicentes future, the next three games, the responsibilties in letting players go, the type of players he wants in the future, Mackail-Smith.............and about 1 minute of talking about money and the Chairman.

It's not only transfers.

As has been widely reported, many clubs' wage bills are far higher than ours. Look at what happened with Glenn Murray FFS.

As I have agreed on a previous post, but Gus was given a decent budget at the start of the season for a team coming up from the division below. That is undeniable.

Decent budget for what? Completely depends what the aim was.

Decent budget to stay up? Yes.
Decent budget to go up again? Definitely not.

Well it cant have been that far off. Were we not comfortably in a play off position 4 games ago? Was it only money that made us not win one of the following matches?

For what its worth I dont think we are good enough to go straight up. I dont think the budget was good enough for that either. I dont think anyone really expected that. But the fact we have fallen short isnt money yet Gus cant help but blame that and not himself.

Are you really such a complete bore?

CMS £2.5m
Hoskins £500k
Buckley £1m
Lua Lua Probably £500k
Harley £250k
Vincente Free

Plus at least an average of £8k a week wages = £2.5m

Offset agains Bennets £1.5 m and there is hardly any change out of £6m. Learn maths!

Thats not even thinking about wages on Vokes, Assulin, Razak, Mattock, Reyes, Harper, Painter.

Ouch..and whatever...plus some of that is guesswork...and maths has nothing to do with guesswork....and check Painter?

Practically every side around us (Boro, Cardiff, Blackpool) and even those some way below us (Ipswich, Leeds, Leicester) all have spent FAR more than us on Championship quality at least players over the last 3-4 years.

We have done SUPERBLY this season with the (mostly League One) squad we have. Certainly overachieved.

We were never "comfortably" in the playoffs with the run of games we had left.

I'm hoping this season Bloom sees how close we are to promotion in our first run in the Championship under Gus, and is willing to splash a bit of cash during the summer. Sell a fair few of our boys, wonder if any Prem team is still after Dunk?

Let's just pray to God that Gus doesn't buy a load of players that are either injured, or shit. Harley was such a let down...

Ok, where do you think that the "guesswork" is unrealistic? Harley is on £8k pw, so Im sure that the rest are on at least that average as CMS and Vicente will certainly be earning a fair bit more. The only real guess is how much we paid for Lua Lua.

Oh and thanks for confirming that you are actually a complete bore by highlighting Painter instead of Paynter. Congratulations.

Depends on your definition of comfortable. Two points clear of seventh, with a lesser goal difference than others, having played a game more, with four other play-off/promotion contenders still to play stretches that definition a little.

I don't know where you get your information from but our players are not on average earning 8k a week!

If you read my post propoerly I was saying that Buckley, Vicente, CMS, Harley, Lua Lua, and Hoskins are on an avg of £8k per week. The new players. In fact I'd be suprised if its that low. CMS is apparently 5 figures a week, I'd be astounded if Vicente is less. Harley is £8k pw.

Depends if your figures are after bonuses (apperance, assist, goal etc), no way is that basic.

Watched the whole interview on Seagulls world. This is what I took from the interview.

- All about bringing the right players in to begin with, players that understand the system. Players that are physically strong.

- Next season he wants the playoffs. Each season he want to improve.

- Sounds like a few players might be going. He said he does not like doing it, but he is the manager. Gus said they have been very very fair, but this summer is coming the Ugly part, we see.

- Hoskins still our player and will be back. Said he was not pushed out. Left because he wanted to get some games in.

- Budget, Gus is not going to cry, but he is going to ask for what is needed. Budget to have a chance.

- Asked if CMS was feeling down. Gus said CMS just wants to score goals, and he said give him time.

- Vicente, he will let him decide what he wants to do. He will sit down and talk to him. But said he would not blame him if he wanted to play at a higher level.

So it boils down to "we're still on course, we wont' lose CMS, i'm not a bully who doesn't like players and if Tony keeps thing sensible but invested in the club we'll be where we want to be"? Pretty sweet.
