Gus' decisions today

I'm still trying to work it out. Greer, Dunk and Calderon didn't stand a chance when we went five up front, so either he's being really unfair exposing what was left of our defence to a rampant Liverpool, or he decided we were going to lose anyway so what the hell, lets have a bit of a laugh and you never know.

Judging by his expression on the touchline I'm inclined to believe the latter, and at least with that might be able to happily forget about this and carry on, although the beating we took at the hands of the commentators, at least in my part of the world, was rather hard to take. Was this really sensible at Anfield?

Finally, anyone who takes this too seriously and starts calling for people to be dropped based on today is rather foolish imo

Really did not matter. We were appalling across the whole of the defence. A loss is a loss. We need a decent keeper, we missed Mattock and Reyes and felt so bloody sorry for Bridcutt especially. :(

My heart goes out to Bridcutt. He has no need to lose sleep over today.

I thought the defence did as well as can be expected. No protection in front of them. Bridcutt looks great when we have the ball, just stands off when they have it. Navarro too. Against players of their international pedigree and quality, who were really up for it, it created chaos in our box. Somehow Gus' answer to that was to take off a defender and put five up front.

Bridcutt was trying to make up for the shortcomings of the others, particularly Brez and Caldi who were pants. Brez saved a poor penalty but apart from that he was dire. Navaro was back to his usual shite too. Bridcutt at least tried and I thought Greer and Dunk made a good show of it. Shame Brez forced a 3rd own goal out of Dunk. We need a stronger left back (Reyes) and a more confident keeper, again!

Back to the league for us now.

Is what as though Will Buckley was bad. He was up against Enrique who was just too good. I was disappointed when he was taken off. I would liked to have seen Macca start instead of Vokes.

Playing two wingers doesn't work. Liverpool only played one.

Gerrard should have been credited with a goal.

I actually think Gus picked the best team available to him. We were just up against seasoned internationals and Champions League veterans. Really no point nit picking, we were outclassed because ever single one of their players were significantly better than ours.

Still, it's a nice yard stick for us. We'll recover. UP THE ALBION.

Whole inquest does not matter. Move on, we got well beaten, Gus will learn, end.

We are never going to look dominate with the way we play, people judge on flair & attack.
so when the emphasis is on the back, they are going to struggle when the keeper can only punch (not very well tbh) & cannot command his area.
We could not cope with the extraordinary bounce on the pitch, the ground must have been really firm in places.
El Abd played like any Premiership defender. Ugly, but that’s what they do. Get used to it if you want to go up.
Feel for Bridcutt, he shouldn’t have had to be in those positions, but good for him that he tried right to the end. Hope his back is ok for Wednesday.
Get real, we are 1st division Champions in transition against a team that would have struggled to put out a better side. That said, we are doing well in transition and will be in the playoffs this year.
So having let the heart rule for the cup let’s get back to our head ruling for the remaining games of the season. Head says that there are no outstanding sides this season, we all have to play each other, so anything can and probably will happen.

Jesus Christ Gus stated we were going for the win before the game a win was seen as a bonus not a necessity this will be good experience for our team and will benefit for the future but the priority is the league. I think some of you need to relax and enjoy the ride and stop criticising everything, I take it you were not around when we really were shit, you would have been suicidal.

This, and to add given the amount of space he had Downing will want to play us every week.

gus's decisions were of a man who did not want a replay at any costs! he looked to have told the players to simply 'go for it'.

liverpool played very well to be fair to them, but gus didnt want a defensive/counter attack masterclass today. he wants playoffs and promotion a lot more than he wanted a fa cup q-final clearly.

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
Do or die. We had nothing to lose at 3-1. We could shut up shop for damage limitation or we could go for it. Had we scored a goal to make it 3-2, the dynamics of the game would have changed completely. As it happened, we didn't and we got overrun, but there was nothing to be lost in giving it a go.
