Poyet: British players are unrealistically priced... until that changes I'm shopping abroad

Brighton manager Gus Poyet insisted young English players are grossly over-priced and that he will continue to look abroad when bringing in young talent to support the club's promotion drive.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's FA Cup tie against Arsenal, Poyet called for British clubs to steep themselves in reality when they try to sell on their most promising youngsters.

Poyet said: 'It doesn't matter if you are from around the corner or from the other side of the world. What is a matter for England is how expensive the English players are. There are British players who have done nothing in football, yet they cost millions.

'Until we become realistic in the price of British players then those teams who want to play in a different way and want intelligent, quality players will have to go abroad. It’s simple. There are no two ways.

‘I see the prices you have to pay for some players and it’s scary. I’m looking for the best players and it doesn’t matter where they come from.
‘The problem is that when you want a specific kind of player for a specific position and you want to get that player and he costs you £7million, £8m, £10m, £12m, then you need to go abroad.

'Another problem is that there are not many British players. The academies need to create more. The more you create, the price goes down. It’s like any product. In a year’s time at Brighton we’re going to have a new training ground, so we’re going to make players.

'It’s going to take at least five, six, seven years and we cannot start with the players that are 18 and 19 now. 'But the ones who are under 14 and under 15 are brighter and I can tell you that in five years’ time, you will see Brighton with plenty of British players from the academy.’

He's right. Look at Newcastle. I know people take the p!ss for having so many French players but in reality you have a choice: buy a 7/10 foreign player for £2m or a 7/10 english player for £12m.

Zaha for £15m is another example, is he actually worth £15m? Could you get a similar player for less?

Exactly, all that tripe is BS.

Gus got it right, it's not about English players, or foreign players, it's about good technical quality players. In England we do not produce many of them, so when one comes around he is immediately tipped for a future England shirt and hyped up as the next big thing, wow look a good English player! Like in any market something which is scarce is expensive, but good English footballing talent should not be so scarce.

We shouldn't blame managers who look abroad for good young players, and managers who do should not apologize for it. We should be asking why they have to? And it has to do with how we are developing young footballers, the cost of English players is just a symptom of the much more serious problem that there are not many good ones.

Another reason British players are so expensive is the over inflated transfer prices that have been on the rise ever since the Premier League was created. It's not just about a dearth of talent of English players - you have Premier League clubs being able to pay over the odds prices due to the lucrative TV contracts and agents having the grubby mitts all over transfer deals.

And yet Fraizer Campbell just went to Cardiff City for <£1m...

That's a different type of transfer though. That's buying down. If a player is dropping from Prem to Champ then clearly the fee wont be as inflated.

The statement is referring to prem clubs buying or buying a player from a lower team/league who has achieved.

Connor Wickham is another example of massive money for a british player who is purely 'potential'

As Gus said, it's simple supply and demand. Not a lot of good, young british players. So they're expensive. Simples.

They're generally shit as well. Seems strange to pay a premium for sub-standard goods.

It's easy just to pick out a couple of signings, how about.-

Grant Holt £400k
Joe Hart 100k
Leon Brittan £400k
Raheem Sterling £600k
Lambert 1m

Joe Hart and Raheem Stirling were either loaned out or developed in the youth system for some time.
Rickie Lambert and Grant Holt were both signed by League 1 teams and have progressed well with the team.
Leon Britton was the only cheap player bought who became an instant Premier league starter.
