There was one in Worthing back in the 80's which was my introduction to proper burgers.

Glad to see the Hove one staying open though. Nothing better in the summer than a stroll down from the County Ground for lunch at Grubbs.

It seems the owner had just had enough. Fair play. There are plenty of decent, high end hipster burger pop ups in Brighton. And they serve good, well made fare with great ingredients and locally sourced, organic , cured meat. They concoct their own sauces and condiments and seasoning and take great pride over their “craft”. But good luck finding one of those beardy ***** out of bed and open for business at 2:30 am when the Pav Tav had kicked out, you’re staircased on snake-bite and black with an inexplicable urge for a blue-cheese burger when you should just go home and make some toast :)

Mind you, kids don’t seem interested in boozy nights out these days. They all seem to want to stay in and revise and hang out with their parents.
You have to head up North to find people up for a good night these days.

My 'kids' and their friends must be northerners then.

I remember it just... was it the one down the side of Woolworths just off Montague street ( Leo Sayer reference there too )...

We've been truly blessed in this town to have had both Grubbs and Uncle Sams all these years :bowdown: :bowdown:

The Uncle Sams in Carden Avenue will soon be under threat, a McDonald’s is opening next to ASDA Hollingbury.

Uncle Sam's, Grubbs and Big Bites were the tits for burgers. You'd go to Tucker's for your kebab. I got to know the owner a bit, one of the hardest working people I've ever met. Rarely had a day off and dealing with drunks all night couldnt have been easy. I hope the Western Road one stays for years to come.

Not sure where you are thinking of - maybe when Old Nicks had a place at the end of the arcade.

Grubbs was near West Worthing station on the corner of Pavilion Road and South Street Tarring. Having changed hands a few times it has been Ace Burgers for many years now but not a patch on Grubbs.

Back in the day a group of us used to drink in the pubs in Portslade with a bloke who preferred driving to drinking so we could go to Grubbs afterwards.

Sad about the ones that have closed, but I'm glad its the Palmeira one that has survived as thats pretty much the only one I've used. Many, many club/pub crawls would end up in there on the stagger home. "Double chilli with cheese please mate".

And then it would come down in that charming little wooden lift. Lovely.

My mate, the filthy animal, would buy two Grubbs burgers after a night out. One to inhale on the bus and then one to pop in the microwave the following morning.
30 years ago I had a mate who would do the same. Only he used to stash the 2nd one in the glove compartment of his car and eat it cold for breakfast on his way to work the next day.

I remember regularly getting a double chilli with extra chilli from Grubbs near St Peter's Church, round the corner of the bottom of Cheapside when I wasn't getting the same from Uncle Sam's.
The chilli was sweeter and the burger more chargrilled and juicy from Grubbs. The salad was always crunchier in the Grubbs burger too.
I can recall the tastes and textures and my mouth is watering as I'm typing even though it must be over 25 years since I last had a burger from Grubbs.

It’s only when you leave the city that you appreciate small things like this. Two better less poncy burger bars you could not wish to find.

You can keep your meat liquors and honest burgers where it’s £9.65 for a single patty burger with some lettuce, bacon and cheese and give me a double mushroom burger with a bin bag full of fries and a questionable milkshake for £6.50 any day of the week.

I miss Grubbs and Uncle Sam's. It was one of the better burger places in Brighton.

The only man stream one I have is Burger King. Mcdonalds is crap

Article in the Eye shows that Deliveroo can charge 30 - 33% commission but that can increase. That cannot be sustainable for small operators.

it probably wont be sustained once normal business is resumed and places and customers can return to their previous patterns. takeaways will go back to walk up trade, restaurants return to table service. those that see value in the service will continue with it. cant blame a company for providing delivery service, ask what would happen if it didn't exist?
