Just out of interest, how much does it cost to have a allotment? I appreciate that it depends on how big they and other variables but are they generally something which is under personal ownership or is rental the done thing?

I'm 28 by the way so please excuse my ignorance!

You effectively rent it from the council. Price will depend on where you are but in B&H it's about £35 for 5 rods ( half a traditional plot ).

This thread could become very beneficial as the spring goes on for novice gardeners like me, have a massive passion for it, but always unsure if I am doing it right, would welcome the experiance of people on here as time goes on to ensure i am doing it right and basic stuff like the best time to plant things?

COuld even go as far as photos in a month or so to see who shooting the best!!

According to their info, in Haywards Heath, the average allotment is 5 sq. rods.

Not sure what compelled you to drag local politics into this. Are you HB&B?

 Kind of shows how wrong Haywards Health Council are. A TRADITIONAL allotment is 10 rods regardless of what a council or a political party suggests otherwise. You know perfectly well why I dragged local politics into the discussion Alan. The fact that you won't see any bad in the local Greens speaks a million words. I'd suggest that if I'd levied the same accusation at the Tories you wouldn't have responded at all !

The entire site of the allotments of which mine is one is owned by HH Council I believe but it is leased at a peppercorn rent to an allotment society who in turn sublet each plot. Mine is average to smaller than most on the site and many of the older people who have had plots for years have more than one. One person, the ex chairman, has either 3 or 4 each one much larger than mine. The rent is set by the committee of the society and they have just put mine up from £15 last year to £17.50 this year to be exact so I would suggest the rental has gone from £1.50 per rod to £1.75. I am not 100% sure that their definition of a rod is correct but some of the plots are narrower than others so perhaps they have their own version of a rod. Although I do know one of the committee walked around every plot last year with a walking measure with one wheel.

It was on the radio a few weeks ago that an old ancient law says that if 6 people go to the council requesting land for an allotment the council are duty bound to find a site for them.

Oh shut up about the f***ing Green Party for five minutes, would you?

Meanwhile, back on topic, I intend growing tomatoes in my cheap plastic greenhouse, and would appreciate advice on that too. Can I grow anything bigger than cherry tomatoes in these things with any hope of success?

Using a Land Measurement chart on the internet a sq rod is 3.3059 sq yds. 4 rods = a chain and if my memory of school maths is correct a chain is the same length as a cricket pitch 22yds.
