Greer bid denied by Swindon

Argus are quoting Tony Bloom and financial figures, so it sounds like we made two official bids.

As for Elphick, Tunnicliffe etc are good enough, we have been shit at defending for at least 2 seasons, yet people are happy to continue with what we have got. We need a new centre back with experience, it to me is obvious, and it seems Poyet is trying to do something about it.

We have been struggling against relegation for the past couple of seasons, so change is definately needed on the players side of things
for most of tht time we didn't even have defence coach top be fair.

Yes, but how is that different to signing Greer for £250k and paying him £5k a week? That's the point he is making - we don't care who gets the £250k.

Exactly, were not going to be able to afford the 10k a week or more possibly he was on at Norwich so if you throw him the signing on fee we were going to spend on greer and then pay him 5k a week or in line with what ever our top earners get there might be a deal to be done...which also keeps salaries in line.

Pork pie land.
Chairman sounds a bit of a pratt, If after making verbal offer its acceptable you then formalise the deal with a written one.
Having knocked back Tony's verbal offer what is the point of putting it in writing if it not going to go any further. It a complete waste of time, money, paper and ink !

Is exectly what I thought when I read it.

I am wondering if the player is likely to want to go if he knows we are interested, and their Chairman is trying to play down the situation. Also, I believe, some players have clauses that their Agent must be advised about offers etc., and they are trying to stop the matter going any further.

Obviously, the differing valuations is normal, and only to be expected.

I know a few people are saying that £250k is a great deal for Swindon given that he only has a year left on his contract. But they are in the same position we were with Crofts. £250k is probably a fair price, but they don't want to then have to go out and replace him with an unknown quantity for possibly and equal amount. They will be seeing it like this:

Option One: they retain their CB who has performed well for them - no hassle, no grief, no risk. But get no money for him in a years time. But that's one key position sorted for 2010/11.

Option Two: they sell their CB to Brighton for £250k, but they then have to find another one for equal or less (unless they want to be out of pocket) which is a distraction at best. It's a risk and unsettling.

I can see why they are saying "if you want him you pay a premium - for the hassle and to ensure that we can buy a replacement". He's probably not worth £400k, but it might not be worth Swindon selling him for less if you see what I mean.

Substitute Crofts name in all this and you can see the point maybe?

Wise words TRHK, its probably even harder to replace a centre half over a centre mid in my opinon also.
