Greer bid denied by Swindon

ANDREW Fitton insists Town have received no formal offers for captain Gordon Greer, but Brighton chairman Tony Bloom claims they have had bids for the defender rejected.

National reports yesterday suggested a £250,000 offer from the Seagulls for the central defender, pictured right, had been knocked back, something which Swindon supremo Fitton denied.

However, Bloom last night claimed Albion had made a “second offer” for the former Doncaster man, which was promptly knocked back, and that they will now look elsewhere.

The Advertiser understands Brighton watched Greer numerous times towards the end of last season and have made contact with Swindon about the 29-year-old, who has 12 months left to run on his current deal.

They initially had a conversation just days after the play-off final, before expressing their interest again late last week. But it is believed their verbal bid for Greer falls well below Town’s £450,000 valuation.

“Brighton have not made a bid of £250,000 for Gordon Greer, full stop. Or any bid for that matter,” Town chairman Fitton told the Advertiser.

“I’ve said it before that an offer is not an offer until it is in writing on official headed paper. I don’t give any credence to any of these stories. Because we were successful last season we have had a lot of clubs asking how much for a number of our players.

“And the answer to most of them is the same as what I have said previously - that I wouldn’t get out of bed for it.

“It is obvious that we’ve built a successful squad and now want to build on that.

“We have already lost a few players over the summer and need to replace what we have lost, not lose more.”

I don't see the point in paying loads for a 29 yr old, we have Elphick, Tunnicliffe and Dunk which is good enough for me at present.

Having clarified that they want more than 250 grand for him, Bloom has decided to go elsewhere. Doherty would be a good option if his wages aren't ridiculous. Agree- I also think however that elphick, tunnicliffe & dunk are not enough and that we need an experienced cb in the mould of Morgan, Crosby or Butters. if we want promotion then it's naive to suggest that it's enough to have three young defenders vying for one of the most important positions on the pitch.

I met your scout at swindon games on numerous occasions last year and we always tried to second guess who he was looking at, we thought it was cuthbert but it seems to have been greer. nice bloke though.

I Cant beleive people are happy with these 3 as well as they did in the latter part of last season, not anywhere near the quality needed to get out of the division in my opinion

Maybe one of those could play alongside the experienced, quality CB that we need. Would make the team so much stronger.

Argus are quoting Tony Bloom and financial figures, so it sounds like we made two official bids.

As for Elphick, Tunnicliffe etc are good enough, we have been shit at defending for at least 2 seasons, yet people are happy to continue with what we have got. We need a new centre back with experience, it to me is obvious, and it seems Poyet is trying to do something about it.

We have been struggling against relegation for the past couple of seasons, so change is definately needed on the players side of things

sadly it is NOT good enough....we desperately need experience/strength/consistency at the back and none of these offer it. I can easily see either Tunnicliffe or Elphick moving on to be replaced by Greer and/or someone of similar character

I'd say we've been bad at defending from the 1 1/2 seasons up to Jan 2010. Since then we've been one of the better defences in the League. Although totally agree that we need an old, 7/10 every game, head in at CB.

Well that was what I thought. Why their chairman has made this comment seems a bit stupid. We keep hearing that Swindon have plenty of cash so I guess they don't care that Greer can go for free in twelve months time. Paying £450000 for a bloke who is nearly thirty is ridiculous at this level though.
