thats one map, out of many that show only former iron curtain nations as 'balkan'
as a former resident of greece i know that the people would not be too happy to be labled as 'balkan' in the same catergory as the scum albanian, catholic croats and name theiving 'macedonians'
It depends on how you classify the Balkans. There is no doubt Greece is part of the Balkan peninsula, but I accept that these days people tend to use to term Balkan to refer to the former Yugoslavia and Albania.
Just because Greece wouldn't like it, doesn't make it less true however. And their rivalry with the Macedonians is comical. I love how Skopje's airport is now called Alexander the Great International. That must piss the Greeks off SO MUCH
yeah it does, im 25 now but i went to school over there for a year when i was about 6 or so and even at that age teachers would tell us not to trust the albanians and turks and that the 'skopjians' (you were never allowed to call them macedonians) arent a real race of people, just slavic speaking greeks who were brainwashed by the turks.
And that the only people to trust were the serbs and russians (obviously due to their mainly same religious beliefs)
The greeks are so insecure its funny.
In a geographical sense yeah i guess they are in the balkans, but not in a political sense.
I was in Skopje last month and quite a few Macedonians told me how the Greeks would only ever refer to them as Skopjians. One girl found it particularly frustrating as she didn't even live in the capital. I guess it's the Greeks refusing to acknowledge the country's name, as they believe it's theirs.
Seriously bitter rivalry they have though. I've heard the Greeks quite often just close the border with Macedonia as they fancy, just to piss them off.
