Easy answer here

David Gilmour - comfortably numb LIVE at Pulse. Google it. It's just epic

I see that and raise the Live 8 version...i think the general emotion of the occasion adds that little extra to it.

To be honest its all very subjective and so many factors come into play not least your musical tastes. For me you have to break it down a little more I.e. solos with great feel,tone, technical ability or perhaps great in the context of the song. On that latter example I would reference Van Halens Beat It solo on the Jackson track. Pure pop but after the Steve Lukather main riff VH's off the cuff solo is pure class whilst being short and sweet.

Never really been into guitar heroics, but Mick Ronson's solo in Moonage Daydream is just sensational.....not just the cosmic craziness of the playing itself, but all the theatricality as well.

(can someone tell me how to post YouTube clips please ?)

Having had to watch Slash play his parts in 'November Rain' about 9 times when we made the video for it in Los Angeles, I have to say that it was quite outstanding - not least because he did it every time ad hoc, with variations and completely seamlessly.
For greatest solos, I'd suggest Rory Gallagher, on....... whatever I heard him do last!

But anyway, here are some picks;

For sheer enthusiastic ebullience, early Eric Clapton.....

For re-inventing the guitar, and shoving it in the craw of every musician before or since, the ferrel master. The solo I'm thinking of is right at end. Well, if you've got to end a little ditty like this then why not just bring it down with a solo? :ohmy:

...and relax. Relax with a little glam band, fronted by a pretty unheralded, unassuming young fellow. 1 song, 2 solos, VFM!
Comfortably what?

Speaking of Pink Floyd, the player for this solo Tim Renwick, ex of 'Quiver', was later to become a live member of the Floyd.

For all of the fans by Eddie Van Halen, I'll chuck in a piece you lot might enjoy;

Some brilliant players. Jan Akkerman, Scott Henderson, Harvey Mandel, Junior Brown, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jeff Beck... and the list could go on.
But to round the post off - the arrogant axe-slinging rock-n'roll cowboy never was better represented in my opinion, than by Alvin Lee at Woodstock. Breathtaking.

All guitar solos are self-indulgent bollocks. IMO like.

I take it you don't like Rodrigo's ' Concierto de anranjeuz ' then.........

I'm going to vote for anything involving Steve Morse. In fact I regularly listen to his albums on the train down to the Amex just to get me in the mood like.

'Stand Up' and 'Major Impacts 2' are my personal favouriites.

And of course he makes a guest appearance on the latest John Wetton solo album - for me that has to be the absolute guitar based rock 'dream team'.

Check this one out then. All atmosphere, does more in 3 notes than 99% of guitarists do in 200.

Also this. Very few different notes, rises and falls almost more like a string section. Exquisite feel.

I'm not talking about 'playing a bit of guitar which is integral to the song'. I'm talking about 30 or 40 secnds of show-boating which, whilst technically impressive, is effectively completely distinct from the song it purports to form part of. Most of the suggestions posted fall into this category, however 'clever' the skills exhibited might be.

Guitar solos are (almost without exception), to music, what pointless additional step-overs are to football.
