For cut and paste soundtracks you can beat 24 Hour Party People or Trainspotting. Or Love and Death.

Do movie versions of musicals count? If so, then Cabaret.

Oh, and I forgot about Frida earlier.

One that springs to my mind is Southern Comfort which was scored by Ry Cooder. Cooder also did Paris,Texas in a very similar vein but both captured the menace of the films.

'Koyaanisqatsi' by Philip Glass - you've never heard anything like it before and you'll never hear anything like it again....unless you play the CD more than once.

Trainspotting and Trainspotting II (second soundtrack from the film, not second film!)

Shallow Grave

The best ever - were it not for the existence of West Side Story. Although Cabaret is a much better film. But these don't really count as "soundtracks", do they? The Graduate deserves a mention.

Barry, Morricone, Yann Tiersen, even Jerry Goldsmith has his moments. But the daddy of them all is Bernard Herrmann - Psycho AND Taxi Driver? They found him dead slumped over the manuscript of the latter, apparently.
