Albion in the Community is offering 16 and 17-year-olds from Brighton & Hove a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take part in National Citizen Service (NCS) during the October half-term holiday.

Following the success of the scheme over the summer it is being made available to young people in the autumn for the first time.

Up to 45 young people from the area will be travelling to Blacklands Farm, East Grinstead where they will have the chance to do activities including rock climbing, mountain biking, kayaking.

The new autumn programme will give more young people a chance to get involved in NCS. Over half-term they will spend time away from home doing outdoor activities and learning new skills. During the rest of the programme, taking place over the following six weekends, they will work with their teams to learn about their community and organise and run their own social action projects.

NCS ambassador Bear Grylls commented; “National Citizen Service is an incredible programme which reaches out to young people in all communities around the country and offers them the chance to learn great life and outdoor skills. It gives them opportunities to develop skills such as teamwork, leadership, adventure, pride and responsibility. I would urge young people to sign up to the places available to take part in this brilliant scheme this autumn.”

One such successful graduate, Eleanor Wells, said: “I’m so glad a signed up, I was really nervous about going away but I made lots of new friends and had the best time. NCS has given me the opportunity to make new friends, learn so many new skills but most of all to be much more confident, I really believe everyone should go on NCS.”

Or they could join a local scout troop/explorer unit who do this week in week out.

My scout troop are very active and go away on camps at least 6 weekends and one week over the year ( this doesnt include any of the district/county run badge course camps either)

NCS probably offers a bit more than a scout troop. As well as outdoor pursuits participants will also have an opportunity to take part in more vocational activities like photography, time in a state of the art TV studio, young enterprise and a communication skills workshop. NCS also gives participants an opportunity to design and deliver a social action project to benefit the local community. It's a really well structured and comprehensive programme.
