[Football] Granit Xhaka's apology

I can remember back in the day (pre social media of course) our very own Johnny Crumplin regularly getting dogs abuse from large sections of the crowd every week. Then he played a couple of blinders in the Cup against John Barnes in his Liverpool pomp, and the legend of JCFG was born. The fans did a full 180 on Crumps, he got his own chant, t-shirts were printed, and he became one of the best-loved players of the Goldstone era, even if it was with a slightly indulgent sense of irony.

Maybe Xhaka just needs to put in a legendary performance to win those fans round - although I fear the overwhelming sense of entitlement at the Emirates would make that very difficult.

Trouble is, much of this social media nonsense surrounding these big clubs is from idiots who've never watched football from anything but a TV screen. If it is effecting your state of mind and your performance, you're a professional athlete, not a celebrity - turn the social media off. The abuse isn't right by any means, but the solution is fairly simple.

Maybe.

But Liverpool have had far more success than Arsenal, and I couldn't imagine in my worst nightmares Liverpool supporters targeting one of their own players like the Arse plastics have done. Does Liverpool attract fewer plastic fans than Arsenal I wonder? Hmmmm.....probably it is just another example of statistical clustering, and the effects of positive feedback and thresholding.

I sometimes wonder what would happen to all the nice people getting of the trains from Kent and Sussex at Victoria if someone shouted 'Fire' one morning. People would possibly be trampled to death with little by-your-leave, possibly. Maybe not.....maybe the threshold is higher - man with gun shouting 'god is great' maybe?

Didn't Liverpool 'fans' abuse Loris Karius a whole heap after the champions league final 2018 in which he got concussion?

Pretty certain that they did - none of the 'big clubs' with their huge amount of online plastic 'fans' are better than each other... twitter - as much as i like it for finding out things i wouldn't elsewhere - is absolutely awful for player abuse, and that includes brighton players getting their fair share as well.

He can switch off his social media, but it won't stop the abuse in the stadium though, which is what really got to Xhaka last week. A lot of that abuse is fuelled by social media, particularly that gooners YouTube channel where a bunch of over-reactive morons shout and rant the loudest in order to get the attention they crave. A lot of the fans abusing Xhaka at the game will have taken their lead from that, I have no doubt.

It'll be interesting to see what reaction Xhaka gets from the Emirates crowd tomorrow.

Arsenal fans are an absolute soap opera, bunch of delinquents.

I don’t think Xhaka should have reacted how he did but every human being has a limit, it’s so easy for arsenal fans and others to say it’s not acceptable to react how he did, but put in that scenario I can’t honestly imagine how I’d react. That aside, I don’t think any player should be booed individually, no player goes out to play badly... if you want to boo the team then do so, I disagree with that as well but at least then you aren’t solely scapegoating an individual.

The lad is just a football player, who maybe having a few bad games. Grumble to your mates, suggest maybe the manger should drop him for a few games by all means. Some questions :

1. When the alleged messages started upping the the ante in their vileness did he bother to report to the club? If not why not? If they were alerted have arsenal actually confirmed this and have they attempted to take any action where possible and or pass on details m anyone else i.e. the police he threats were made? If not why not?

2. Why not just try avoiding social media and just count your money and/or let your performances on the field do the talking for you. Which is probably what most players do rather than giving it the big one to their own fans.

Call me a cynic but I'm smelling very clever advice from his agent/advisers to deflect blame away from that supreme arrogance and sense of entitlement that people have previously mentioned.

This doesn't excuse any dickheadish trolling with malevolent intent, but i wonder about who would be our Xhaka in such a situation. As in, if it's true that he was chosen as captain by the squad itself, whilst being generally unadmired by the fans already, who would we constantly jeer in part for the player just not being the strong-hearted representative we craved? I'd think the captain Elvis Manu substitution would be largely boo-ed, and not out of disagreement for his departure.

The manager has wisely left Granit Xhaka out of tomorrow's game.

Common sense with the difficult few days he's had, a couple of weeks before the next home match and hopefully Wolves beat the Gooners so they can moan and boo someone else without any disgusting social media comments. #twats

Xhaka had no need to apologise. He was upset, very upset. There comes a point when everything hurtful that people have done or said comes to a boiling point. Social Media is becoming more and more venomous - I'd have to be six feet under before I opened a Twitter or Instagram account!

The only other option as I saw it was to refuse to apologise and possibly be frozen out until January by the manager where he'd join a decent European side.

Hopefully this saga is now finished and Arsenal 'fans' learn their lesson. I'm not holding my breath though........

That's your opinion and I respect and mostly agree with it.

Yes, he does get booked far too often but he's putting in the challenges so he wants to win for the team. However, captains shouldn't be booked so frequently though. I found it funny yesterday that Arsenal had failed to win yet again so they can't blame him this time.
