Anyone remember when De Boer took over at Palace and tried to get their existing players to play an expansive style?
I don't recall it being a huge success.

The key phrase here is EXISTING PLAYERS.

The urgency is because we’ll have a combination of last year’s new signings bought with this type of style in mind and other new signings more in this mould.

I expect some of the ‘CH grafters’ might be given a chance to adapt or survive but realistically this is nothing like that shit show up the road.

Do you think that the players let him down, or our recruitment or both?

I think CH let himself down by running out of ideas, which demoralised the players, which made CH revert to type even more, which further demoralised the players, and so on.

I've also said on other threads that footballers are never happier than playing in their favourite positions, playing their favourite way. All you need to do after that is make them better at doing what they love doing - which certainly won't be a chore for them. That's when you get the best team spirit and togetherness, where everyone is good at what they do. That's when players trust each other, play with confidence, and (heaven forbid) become an attack minded side.

I also never see the point of buying a player, then playing him out of position - or against what you've bought him for in the first place! Makes no sense to me - but I'm not a football manager so am not qualified to comment.

You think Potter would last 6?

Why not? He’s a little on the green side for the EPL, but from what his record has shown he has delivered some good performances and has considerable managerial experience. This isn’t the same situation as Sami Hyypia or Gus, who were on the early stages of their careers. He’d be relishing for the opportunity to take the step up. As I’ve said already, Potter is a bit of an unknown variable for our chances next season, but Tony wants to give him a chance, so let’s give him a chance.

He’s been playing a 4-2-3-1 formation at Swansea this season so expect more of the same

He actually likes playing with three central defenders in difficult games, but we only had two.

Other than that:

Keeper needs to be good with the ball. Builds play from the back. Uses tall forwards and pacy wingers. Lots of possession.

Yep I mostly agree, but part of becoming a better footballer is to be able to learn a few other positions too. Not just being chucked into a different role and left to it of course, and not always playing out of their best position either.

I'd argue it's exactly like that shit show up the road.
Unless the club want to buy 8 first teamers this summer, I can't see how they can appoint a manager with a philosophy at odds to the players we have.
Fulham already had the players and manager for the expansive style and didn't come close to staying up. It's a monumental risk.

Have I argued about Fulham with you before? I feel like I have.

Their problem was defence. When the manager, the first one (of three), decided on a backline they were invariably shocking. Then he'd go and change it again. He did that repeatedly.

There's stats out there showing that when he got the nudge Fulham had the 7th best possession stats in the league behind the usual top 6.

Genuinely think if they'd sorted out their defensive problems it would have been an even closer run relegation race.

They scored one fewer goal than we did which would to me suggest we're on a par attacking wise. Just we've got better defenders.

Surely an expansive game is going to expose your defence though.

The way I see it with Potter, he is inexperienced at the highest level, so there's a risk.... But clearly his potential is there for all to see... We could wait for him to get experience elsewhere first, to prove himself, but then a bigger club than us would get him, we'd miss out. So there is also a risk in not signing him

So if Potter is actually a football genius, the only way we can get him is by taking a chance now. And if he isn't, we get rid. Have big sam keep us up, and go again next summer.

I guess I'm excited by bloom trying to get an unproven star.... It worked with poyet, not with hyypia, but we are trying again.... we've sacked the safe pair of hands, so not point just getting another one like that

Undeniable logic imho

That's Ok, our defence is MUSTARD.

Besides, I am firmly of the view that attack is, at least, a good form of defense. It would be nice to have the opposition actually have some concern about us getting in behind. Playing defensively as we have done has only allowed the opposition to press as high as they like and play attack vs defense for most of 90 minutes.

We also have pretty decent attacking options, time we used them. I have a lot of confidence in our defense/GK, there is no reason we can't leave the defending to them.

There still seems to be this long standing misconception (especially on this thread) that you are either defensive or ‘expansive’

Expansive has to be the most irritating word in the football vernacular currently

Not to my knowledge. I suspect someone else mentioned them in this context.

We need a poll on how well this man we haven’t even signed yet is going to do this season...so many seem to have already made up their minds.

Do you think that the players let him down, or our recruitment or both?

Recruitment primarily.

The whole ‘Moneyball’ theory is all very well, but we don’t seem to have applied parameters like playing in an ‘inferior’ league and ‘apparently’ have no idea regarding pace (see AJ).

If Hughton’s tactic was to sit deep and break fast, he never had the tools as pace was lacking. We never purchased a viable CF to replace Murray, although we tried. Inevitably, the trouble with playing forwards vs defence is that eventually you will concede (Spurs away).

In terms of the players, I simply cannot believe they stopped trying or anything similar, I just think their shortcomings were found out. Show Knockaert/Izquierdo down the line, close AJ down, rattle Propper early on, rough Dunk up, play a high line because BHA forwards have no pace. That’s without thinking - we were predictable.

When Chris tried to change it, he came unstuck because the personnel at his disposal are limited, hence the bad run.
