[Albion] Graham Potter joins on four-year deal

Potter is not the type of manager to employ quick short term gains in his tactics. Some managers will step into a job and see results improve quickly before a stagnant decline sets in. Potter is about development and improving the players to see long term gains. International management wouldn't suit his best abilities

I’d be gutted to lose Bissouma, but accept it as inevitable, and today showed we can cope. But losing Potter will be much harder. I still think he’ll be England manager after the Qatar WC, so reckon we have this season and next.

Potter's style is inherently unsuited to international management. He needs players who he can drill and form into a unit, for which you need hours and hours with them on the training ground. It arguably took him 18 months to form this Brighton side properly as he'd like it, and that's training for 75% of that time solidly. You don't get that luxury in international football, the players come together for maybe 18-20 days a year (plus an extra month at a tournament if you're lucky), there isn't the time to do that (plus the player turnover is higher). International football requires an "inspirational coach" type manager who basically drills them hard for a few days then gets them to play their own game, which is what Southgate (much as I hate to give hi too much credit, the Dunk-shunning Palace ****) has done.

From today's Guardian "ten talking points from the weekend" section...

5) Potter’s reputation continues to swell

Brighton were without several key players on Saturday, including the vaunted midfielder Yves Bissouma, and also found themselves up against the defender they had sold to Arsenal for £50m. But while Ben White held firm for the visitors, the abiding memory was of a marvellously dynamic performance from Graham Potter’s side that deserved more even though clear chances were rare. Their clarity and consistency have few peers; their level in general play rarely dipped even last winter, when wins were not forthcoming and there were isolated calls for his head. Potter has created a team in his own image, one that operates with supreme intelligence and, for all its quality, is not reliant on individuals. The manager’s understated demeanour belies the reality that he is one of the best around. When one of the top jobs next comes up there is logically no reason why he should not be near the top of anyone’s shortlist.

Bother. Not even remotely under any sort of radar.

He will finish the project here. He don't appear to be money motivated and, from his interviews, he values good honest people around him in his job.

We are very lucky to have him. Will be a sad day when he goes, but it wouldn't suprise me if we already have a replacement on radar.

I think I remember reading/watching something about us keeping tabs on him for 4/5 years before we hired him?

This - there is no way in the world TB and PB won’t already have a clear succession plan in place with a number of potential targets. FWIW my sense is GP will be here a while yet - he needs us to ‘do something’ to properly enhance and cement his reputation.

If any of the big 6 sacked their managers, Potter is likely to be near the top of the shortlist of replacements.

The sad reality is that we are probably going to lose Potter fairly soon, barring an unprecedented act of loyalty, ie. him rejecting a big 6 job.

I think it would have to be in between season and with some kind of plan. Not just a club sacking someone and then looking for the hype thing. Also think he wants to bring Billy and Björn with him which some clubs might reject.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the England job is the one we have to be worried about.

Nah, WAY WAY too early in his career, he is going to want far more involvement in his next job than this part time job would give him

Yes, I think England job is currently a demotion pay-wise and yes, he'll reason there will be time in the future when this night come up, so no need to take it now. The FA are in no position to be poaching a manager on a contract from a PL club

I suppose it depends on how much the the chasing club are prepared to offer/throw in his direction to try and entice him away. Hopefully he would steer clear of the two basket case clubs in North London. The other four could be more tempting along with a few foreign clubs

It's not that I think he wouldn't leave us, but I think half of these top 6 jobs he wouldn't take due to their instability or lack of support from all factions within it

There might be other clubs which are more of a threat, Leicester, Everton etc which he might go for. Maybe 5 clubs in total he'd leave for

Out of these,1 or at a push 2 vacancies per season might come up.

In any case he'll just be one name on a shortlist. There will be other names with more experience of winning trophies (and managing Cristiano Ronaldo type people)

Not inconceivable he'd take another job abroad, but I reckon it would have to be an opportunity of a lifetime to drag him away again.

I think the risk of him leaving in the next couple of years is present but small.

I think Southgate is probably making more money than Potter is. Capello/Eriksson definitely earned more while coaching England han GP does at Brighton. I dont think the payment would be the problem.

Would he say no to England? I think he would realise its not a job that would really suit him - but not quite sure he would be able to say no as its probably the dream job for most English managers.

This with bells on!

Anyone who believes that this unprecedented act of loyalty will be played out by Potter is deluded, wearing rose tinted spectacles etc.

If a Spurs, Arsenal or anyone above come calling he is off. Even if it is not about the tripling of his salary (which will be a head turner to anyone) it will most certainly be the greater opportunity to sit at the top table and potential to mix it with the rest of Europe.

He's a very smart man and will have a career/development plan. He will have seen other managers be linked with big jobs that never materialised (Smug Eddie) and know that if the opportunity arises it may not come back again for a few years. To a large extent he has accomplished what he set out to at Brighton.

So why would he ruin his chances of coaching a club like Liverpool or Man City by managing a dysfunctional club like Spurs or Arsenal?

Because he doesn't have a realistic chance of coaching Liverpool or Man City. They will recruit a manager that has either won the CL or come very close. Not a manager that did remarkably well a good few years ago in the CL.

Maybe, maybe not. I think Pep will be very involved in picking his successor. He's been working with the City CEO and the sporting director first for four years in Barcelona and now five years in City and I dont think they will necessarily go for the biggest name but for the one they feel are the most competent. Liverpool had Brendan Rogers before Klopp, not sure how many CL wins he had.

Totally disagree with this.

Tottenham came calling in the summer. He didn't entertain it and WANTED to finish the project with us. What ever that project is, he won't just go for the money. He as said he likes to work for people he can trust.

I think he would need a strong spell at an Arsenal or Tottenham in order to get himself a shot at a Liverpool or Man City. Or more likely, a Sevilla in Spain or maybe one of the squad of big clubs in Italy. You rarely jump from a PL club to the top 6. Brendan Rodgers at Leicester is rebuilding his reputation in order to try and get another shot at a big 6 club, by making them one of them!

I have no worries about Potter being poached. If it happens, we'll appoint a top class manager we've been keeping an eye on for an extended period of time. I think the squad development by Dan Ashworth and others makes the manager slightly less important - any qualified manager would have this squad performing at least as well as it currently is.

not they didn't. Anyway Spurs are a bad example as they had the Kane/Levy debacle over the summer. Once forgotten if they do show interest it would be a good move for Potter if he can trust the owners.
