Kicking was good, let down by the defence a few times, but ultimately his command of the box was not good enough.
I suspect that he had problems settling down south, as you can't play for Motherwell in the SPL and be that bad.

I suppose with the mos charitable head on Smith is unluncky in that he was protecting a goal in front of a terrible defence. Hoyte, however, is the worst full back I have seen play for Brighton.
no but the club does seem to have a nasty habit of ending careers prematurely, matt thornhill turned from a pomising young prospect at a championship club to unwanted a league one level over the space of one summer.
I think the speed with which he landed a new deal suggests that he's much, much better than people on NSC seem to think.
He had a bum deal down here. He conceded a lot of goal but very few of them were down to him, he had to play behind a defence that was all over the place. Unfortunately, there was a vicious circle as our shoddy defence led to him losing confidence and that loss of confidence affected the defence, making it even worse. He needed a fresh start and I'm sure he'll thrive back home.

Spot on. Having been there for Smith's debut, on that infamous night at the Galpharm, he was not directly cuplable for most of the goals. Indeed once the opposition worked out our "best defender" they threw everything down the right and cashed in.

I felt sorry for him more than anything else. Came into a team with a defence playing like complete idiots, conceded a stackload of goals that actually weren't his fault, then inevitably lost confidence in his own ability as a result, thus giving away even more goals.
None of our keepers can really say they've done consistently well this season unfortunately. Kuipers must be the luckiest man in football, as over the years, we have somehow managed to sign a succession of crap keepers, or on the rare occasion we've found a good one, he turns out to be ruined by injury. No matter what happens with Kuipers' form, we just seem incapable of finding anyone worthy of taking over. Surely even if only by the law of averages we must be due a
good one soon

Good luck to the guy on his return to Scotland where he will be a decent keeper. Although he was signed on a Bosman did the club pay a signing on fee to an agent ? Also with Wright going on loan to Oxford this looks like he will go on a free at the end of the season after we shelled out £100k for him.

Good luck to they boy. Another victim of our crummy non-defence. Never got any kind of protection while he was here. He'll do OK at Hibs.

This was so Mark Mcghee's revenge.
He knew Smith although considered good in the lower reaches of the SPL was nowhere near the required League 1 standard .
So he played a big part in persuading Smith to sign for us. Smith received a size-able signing on fee as did his agent.

GP has already said that he wants to build his own squad of 22-23 players so unless he performs miracles at Oxford I cant see him coming back because we need Championship quality not L2 standard players.

Off the top of my head getting lobbed against Leeds and Norwich were his fault. A few that get credited to the defence were because they had no confidence in him and sat too deep, he just couldn't command his box.
Obviously he's had a bad run of form and can have been that shit before he came here, but from what we saw of him he was toilet. Mabye that night in hudds destroyed him for us.
