[Albion] GP: I think that anyone who criticises someone like Dan Burn doesn't understand football.

It was Webster at fault as he failed to move closer to Salah as BDB moved up to press Alexander Arnold in anticipation of a pass. The space left by that one lapse was effectively exploited by Liverpool.

Of course if you knew anything about football ...

Not sure why GP needs to make a little dig like that. I suppose it show’s he’s human but given his academic background in EI I am a bit surprised.

Felt it was both of them, as Burn had shifted too high, so Webster had to come over.

It's 10.30 pm, Potter's given 5 interviews already, and now some journo asks him a 'clever' question about BDB with a barb in part 2. GP wants to get himself and his team back home before 2.30 am so they can rest a while before Saturday...and the questions about Burnley are still to be asked. GP tries to stay as journo polite as he can but decides to defend fiercely against the journal's barbed question. GOOD!!! Well done Graham. BDB is a very decent squad man - really good performer. Eff off with that question , journo. Can we go home please? Potter IN !!!

BDB is an inspiration to tall, ungainly central defenders everywhere (ahem). He has done some things brilliantly, other things not so well. But I applaud his every success and would absolutely love to see him score a goal.

However, it sounds from what Potter said as if trying hard and doing his best is what has got Burn into the team, and that as long as he does that, a few howlers like the ones he made in the Wolves game can be overlooked. I'd be rather worried if that was what he meant but I suppose he felt it didn't need saying that BDB has to be good enough in the first place.

I think that's right. If GP puts you in the team, that's his choice. All he can then ask is that you follow the plan and try your very best. You can't do more than that, and he can't ask or expect more than that. With the options we currently have GP is playing BDB (and may do so in the future for tactical reasons even if some of the young guns come through as worldies) and BDB is keeping his side of the bargain. GP knows that slagging the guy off for making mistakes (pointless) or not being good enough (equally pointless) isn't going to help.

And just my two pennies worth, I think BDB does give us something different. I doubt he'd get as much playing time if we had more strength on the right, but he does give us something that other teams often find hard to deal with.

Other than Burn is there any other player in the squad who can be a longball outlet from the opposition's press, if Sanchez needs to kick long quickly? (doing so accurately is one of Sanchez's abilities it seems).

On this page.

Not exactly over his head, but a proper tidy piece of work

See the colleague reaction and just as funnily the reaction from Eddie Howe

Thankfully we've seen less of these mm offside VAR interventions recently. I wonder if this would have stood on another day.

He'll get one soon if he keeps taking up advanced positions. I've criticised Burn, especially after the Wolves game but you can't debate the effort he puts in. We should be seeing more of an aerial threat from him given his height however.

If you were a player, what would you want from your manager after taking loads of abuse

(a) The manager supports the player
(b) The manager supports the abusers?

Most of us have played football at varying levels over our lives. If there is anyone there who can say they played out of their skin every single match they are a liar.

BDB had a 'mare against Wolves, that does not make him 'shit', no more than his superb performance at Anfield makes him the best left back since Maldini.

Personally I think its very refreshing - maybe he got a bit subconciously zlatanised during the years over here - with a bit of cockyness and "us against the world" mentality and would actually like to see a bit more of it from him.

Exactly this.
A man that is unfairly critised can only take so much s***, before you bite and fight back.
Love him and BDB, fully focused true gents that know what they want and they will get it.
You either have this true grit and resilence when the pressure is on or you turn over and let them tickle your belly.

Yes, I agree.
You would think the (b) option would never get used. But it clearly does. Maybe the manager is influenced by others that are not so level headed?
The manager has to stand by his reputation and principles in life to what is right and what is wrong and make a clear decision, even if it's unpopular with his influencers.
The respect for this strong leadership will elevate the manager.

Exactly. Not even football, but in any walk of life.

You want your manager to entrust and defend you, to believe in you. Am sure everyone who works for a boss can understand this sentiment.

This is modern management in effect, the old school headmaster hair drier approach is on the out.

Other than a few posts on NSC what criticism has Burn really had for it to even be a conversation for Potter?

I think we have to assume the players and management read twitter and NSC intently.

The criticism they are referring to can't be coming from the terraces.

It's why there shouldn't be threads with titles slating Webster and Connolly anywhere near the top of this board.

It's also why posters should take a breath before posting. Ask yourself before pressing submit. Would I say this out loud if we were face to face?

Precisely.

That’s why some of the thread titles are in extremely poor choice. And it’s a completely reasonable observation, not “an attack on free speech”.

Well said. Totally love DB. Excellent player.

The same way Solly was much maligned for not doing flippy-flaps or 200 stepovers a game, sometimes ppl need reminding of the contributions and qualities players bring to the team.

And maybe ask YOURSELF what the reaction to recent results would have been at the Amex with 30,000 fans there? Potter's been pretty cushioned compared to what Hughton had to endure in real time. December 2020 would have been the exact same fans-at-each-others-throats scenario, apart from due to covid it only gets played out on here. Potter got lucky on that score

To be honest for salaries north of £30k pw a bit of social criticism is probably an acceptable price to pay. Like I've said before players used to get merry hell at the Goldstone when they werent performing and I'd rather a post on social media than 2000 people chanting at me telling me I'm useless.

If they read regularly they should recognise that a few dozen users - out of thousands - criticising individuals is a mere splash in the ocean.

They should also understand that supporters are more likely to air strong views online right now (especially straight after games) due to current social circumstances and the fact that fans can't vocally respond to performances - good or bad - at matches.

Of course, none of this excuses personal abuse towards players, direct/targetted abuse on social, or bigotry/racism. I'm just talking about criticism of performance.

Well, this has been discussed at mod towers and the feeling from those who see user account details is that players don't read NSC - unless, of course, they enjoy reading badly spelled criticism surrounded by spammy ads. It's not how I'd spend my time as a millionairre.

Twitter and Insta are different because users can respond directly to players posts or @ mention them.

Its a forum where you dont need to be a registrered user to read. There is absolutely no way of knowing if any of them visit NSC or not.

This is the biggest BHAFC forum on the internet. If there was some internet forum where people on a daily basis gave you direct feedback on your workplace and your performances as an individual, would you not visit it? Perhaps not. But I'm willing to bet that at least 1 in 30 would.

They may only have a surface glance.

Scenario: Aaron Connolly logs into see what NSC thinks of him. Sees a thread titled “Hopefully the end of Connolly”, approx 50 pages.

Or Adam Webster. In his best form currently for our club, was immense against Liverpool and Spurs. Logs in one night after the Liverpool game to see how happy the fans are. Top thread that night (genuinely was) 100 odd pages “Adam Webster is not a defender discuss”.

Even if it is a minority, to an outsider, seeing the volume of discussion on the above 2 titles may give a sad impression of our fan base.

You can add that though to some of the comments between posters.....

The match day threads are ridiculous.
