This is priceless coming from someone who backed the amendments and general shit show fest that went on in Parliament during the Brexit process
Expect a few more shake ups with the BBC next on the list
Seeking solace with a few of the usual suspects isn't going to change anything

Regards
DF

Face it Ppf, you're easy meat for the offshore billionnaire media moguls...

Voter suppression via voter ID is a matter of opinion.
Wasn't fixed term Parliament only introduced in 2011 under a Conservative/LibDem government, so hardly something of longstanding that needs to be cherished.
The boundary Commission is independent of government. https://boundarycommissionforengland.independent.gov.uk/about-us/
I'm interested to hear the evidence you have of the Conservatives taking control of the Electoral commission.

The government also wanted Paul Dacre put in charge of Ofcom, but are struggling to find people who will interview the former Daily Mail editor.

Leeds - but not the dirty bit

Could you point out which part of this is taking control of the Electoral commission and which part(s) you object to ?

I presume as there was a lack of response to the others that you do not argue that

Powers over the Electoral Commission
While the Electoral Commission will remain independent, the bill will introduce a new “strategy and policy statement”, which the commission must take account of, which will be put together by the Cabinet Office’s secretary of state, currently Michael Gove. Critics say this could allow political interference in the commission’s work and its enforcement priorities – for example obliging a particularly tough interpretation of rules such as those for non-party campaigners.

Good luck if you trust Michael Gove.

As someone who really enjoyed the Paralympics, it has been said that if C4 was not in public ownership that they would not be able to provide anywhere near as much coverage.

I'm sure that there are plenty of other events / topics that would soon disappear if there was less focus on their diversity because of the pressure to make money.

C4's coverage of the Paralympics was in a totally different class to the BBC's shambolic Olympics coverage. They did a fantastic job. I fear that will go when Boris sells it off.

And The Last Leg....don't forget The Last Leg.

Our whole system needs dismantling the UK is not a representative democracy, until this happens little will change and we will continue to see governments get 100 odd seat majorities with sub 40% of the vote.

The Tories aren't finished with fixing the system

Voter suppression via voter ID
Axe fixed term parliament
Gerrymander electoral boundaries
Take control of the electoral commission

They hate C4 News ever sine they did their expose on their lack of a plan for climate change. Johnson wanted to send his Dad to their live debate, C4 said NO, this is a leaders debate

We had the chance not so long ago to move this country towards a representative democracy by supporting ATV PR in the referendum. We didn't. The majority wanted to continue with the undemocratic FPTP system and look what's happened since.

It was phrased awkwardly as an Alternative Vote rather than Proportional Representation which is why it failed.

Indeed! I’ve always accepted that if you go far enough right you’ll meet the far left coming the other way.

I'm not quite sure what point people are trying to make when they make comments like this. The original post was about channel 4, not Marxism today.

Also the far right and far left may both be deplorable, but they don't occupy the same space. The two ends of the spectrum don't meet.

All that is happening here is one side is using this argument to deflect criticism from the side they favour. It's called whataboutery.

The extreme right are racist.
Whatbout the extreme left and their hatred of Israel?
They are all as bad as one another.
Therefore I oppose the taking of the knee.
(etc.).

Anyway, I look forward to the creation of a far left TV channel and newspaper, so I can finally get to check whether they will be exactly the same as GB News and the Daily Mail.

In the meantime, Boris can carry on dismantling any media that tolerates the centre left with equanimity, because when some twit accuses channel 4 or the BBC of bias and being extreme left wing, this goes unchallenged, and the whataboutery starts. Our little NSC Nazi troll will be sniggering all the way home.

I was merely responding to someone else’s comment - “the far left is just as bad” or similar.

And I agree with you entirely - Hitler or Stalin?

And incidentally I’m a fan of Channel 4 as it is, particularly their news - I noticed somebody the other day in one of those celeb Q and A things describe it as “the only grown up news on the TV”.

Extreme right and left wing politics both end up as dictatorships with lack of freedom. That's why I called it horseshoe politics.
It was hard to tell the communist regimes from the nazis with progroms as bad as the holocaust. Both sides had genocides.

"Extreme left" and "extreme right" often do meet when it comes to some things, such as the view that power should be centralised and concentrated. On other topics, such as race, the opinions are usually entirely different.

The concentration of power however always thwarts what was initially sought. Most likely most nazis in the beginning of the movement and most early days communists in Soviet did not want what it eventually ended up being. I dont think its entirely fair to let Hitler and Stalin represent the far right and the far left as they were beyond that and more often acting out of self-interest rather than some kind of ideology.

Stalin killed Jewish people, caused a famine to kill Ukrainians and the Chinese kill Uyghurs.

He did, but unlike with Hitler it was not a matter of race to him. Not that it makes it any better.

As for the Chinese, they are not "extreme left" in any manner - they are a neo-liberal, capitalist country like yours and mine.

Let's have extremism of the centre instead

Yea I'd give it two weeks before the planet was a mix of plastic, desert and dirty water.
