Man, this has to be one of the most frustrating illnesses. I walk a lot, it's my way of staying fit, good for mental health, but gout has put the kybosh on it this week. Only the third attack I've ever had, as mine is hereditary/genetics, so as long as I avoid certain foods I'm all good. I bashed my big toe in the garden the other day and it set it off. Didn't know that could happen, so you live and learn. Thought I'd caught it early, shoved the naproxen down my gob and cracked on, but it's taking its time buggering off. It is getting better, naproxen and icing is helping, but I'm not good at sitting around doing nothing and discovered I'm allergic to picked cherries ffs! 😏 Can you get cherry juice anywhere? Can you heck. Any heads up on that would be great.

My self-cert from work is up on Tuesday, so hoping it's gone by then, swelling has gone down, just the big toe joint looks red and stiff. Don't fancy having to sort out a docs appointment.

Sorry, just a rant, needed to get that out to people who'd get it.
Concentrated cherry juice from Amazon Prime is your friend here  Holland & Barrett used to do it, then stopped doing it for no good reason at all.Maybe they restarted? Not looked

I think Naproxen is similar, but with fewer potential side effects, so just taking that.

Anyone tried daily cherry capsules rather than juice? Any recommendations on brands? Might start taking them as a preventative after this.

Thought Naproxen was a pain killer and Cholchcine an anti arthritis drug which you take for a few days if needed.

When I saw a gout specialist, it was made clear to me that my condition was not lifestyle related. I had a predisposition to crystal form - that is I cannot process Uric Acid. My very sporadic attacks (one every three years, then two, then once a year then ultimately 3 a year) worsened over Eighteen years. The pain got worse too. As someone who hates taking pills I was assured what Allopurinol would do - that is (1) dilute the formed crystals in my mid-foot and (2) keep my uric acid below 0.42. At 0.42 ppm crystal forming occurs. I was told in no uncertain terms that no amount of cherry juice or lifestyle changes would sort out my gout. I took the medication. My Uric Acid level varies between 0.26-0.29 - measured by six monthly blood tests and I have not had an attack for 6-7 years MERCIFULLY.

I was told similar but have also avoided MSG and other food additives, it's helped along with Allopurinol!

Thanks for that, appreciated.

I take cherry capsules, biggest dosage I found was 1900mg, will look further as nearly run out. I think they helped the first 4 weeks then drifted back to pain everyday. I still think they are worth taking and will try a larger dosage. I've been on non stop holidays for the last month, so a lot of drinking and no pain. I'm not liking forward to stopping or slowing down drinking as that brings the pain back. I am also on 300mg allopurinol, I did get up to 600mg but found that worked again for 4 weeks then stopped, so I'm back to 300mg.

I take 1 allopurinol tablet a day too 1x vitamin c, 1x turmeric and the cherry tablet. My attack was put down as hereditary as my weight was good and also my diet. The only two things I gave up were cockles and muscles as I’ve heard they could trigger another attack. No sugary drinks either as fructose is also a no no.

All you gout sufferers DRINK A LOT OF WATER while it’s hot.

Have noticed twinges over the last few days that I haven’t felt in near a year. Im
Sure the hot weather is a factor.

I take Allapurinol to keep it at bay, though I have only had a couple of attacks..... the first time I got it, I had played a game of rugby in Spain, heading to the airport the following morning (after a few drinks and eats) I started to think I had injured my foot in the game, gradually it got worse so on arrival back in the UK I headed to hospital for scans etc,... turns out it was gout, too much Spanish red wine and seafood.... no reoccurrence for years now, medication works it seems.

As mentioned before, attacks can be brewing for months if not longer. I've definitely noticed a redness recently in the ball joint/knuckle (whatever you call it) of my left big toe, and a verrrrrry gradual increase of the odd tingle/twinge.

Dosing up on water big time and avoiding alcohol generally makes it subside for me.

It is gradually getting better, the major swelling has gone down, but the ball joint/knuckle is just so achy. Got an appointment at the docs this morning just to make sure it is all good and don't need to do anything different apart from rest it. My self-cert runs out today, so need a sicknote as well. Man I don't do being incapacitated well 😂
