Have great sympathy for you as my dad suffered with it for years. Ultimately he had a knee replacement.

As for draining, I recall accompanying him to a and e and watched them drain a pint of green liquid from his knee. The tears were pouring out of his eyes but he felt so much relief afterwards

do the decent thing man! get in your car and drive to 'socks of the Has'!

If only I knew where that was !

The best immediate cure for an attack I found was anti-inflammatories. They acted very quickly.

I have no idea what caused mine. My attack was in my wrist, I ended up in A&E thinking my arm was broken. Not knowing anything about gout, when the doctor asked me if I'd ever had it, I said No - at that point he picked my hand up and shook it about. The pain was dreadful and I'm sure he made it worse, I couldn't write for 2 months.

PLEASE READ THIS
I've suffered for around 30 years. Sometimes it was so bad that I too thought about cutting off my toe/ankle/knee to cure it. A few years ago I was put on ANTURAN 200mg which in my case bought on gout but then seemed to clear it for a while. More recently I was prescribed a tablet called Febuxostat 80mg which again brought on an attack but then cleared me for about a year, something unheard of for 30 years. Go to your doctor with these two names and get advice. During an attack I was on 5 or 6 Indmetacin which was just knocking me out. Not sure where you live but I saw a Dr Pool in Uckfield & Crowborough who helped a lot but it takes 6 months to see him.
I found Guinness and Marmite to be bad after spending my Birthday at the Guinness Brewery and suffering for a week after.

What it actually is, is needle shaped Uric Acid crystal in between the joints in your body mainly fingers, knees, toes.
Sometimes you can actually feel the crystals poking out through the skin. I could, you just feel like cutting them out.
As I said Alapurinol for long term treatment, Colchicine for sudden attacks, Cherry Juice, dont eat seafood, purines like peas, broccoli are bad for it too. and the demon drink avoid like mad.

Spongy, I know how you feel, it's bloody terrible. I had it for several years and it would flare up so often. Not just my feet but shoulders, elbows, ankles, knees and once my hand blew up like the Elephant Man.
The docs were no real help but I insisted in seeing a specialist. He saved my life. Firstly he diagnosed me as having severe saturated gout and it would take probably a year or more to finally get it under control. I had to wait a couple of weeks after an attack before I could take Allopurinol as it would make the gout worse. Meanwhile I was on a heavy dose of Indometacin and strong painkillers. Then 300mg of Allopurine in conjunction with a reduced 3 times a day Indometacin.
It took nearly 2 years to really stop having attacks and I take the Allopurinol every day. I occasionally have a very mild attack but medicate myself with Indometacin and it's over in 24 hours. If you want to have a natter about it, please send me a PM. Good luck!

Yesterday I started having an attack in my left ankle. I've hardly slept overnight due to the pain and today I just want to cry in agony.

I used to get regular attacks so started taking allopurinol but since then I've stopped drinking week days (the root cause of it) and have since weened myself off it a could of years ago and I have been fine since. Alas it seems that was a really stupid idea.

Is there anything I can do to stop it? What's not helping is that Ive got an 11 month old daughter who's woken up like Tigger on speed today and I'm stuck on the bed unable to even twitch a toe.

If I take a trip to A&E will they be able to drain it or is that considered a waste of their time?

This hurts so much I want to cut my foot my foot off with a rusty saw just to stop the pain.

I don't have any allopurinol left and I have no way of getting some on a Saturday. Do I seriously just have to ride this out?

I can strongly recommend Cherry Active, concentrated sour cherry juice, from Holland & Barrett, as others have said. One of my my mates recommended it for my gout and it was amazingly effective. It's not cheap (about £9 for a reasonable size bottle) though they're doing buy one get one half price at the moment. Stir a tablespoonful into any old yoghurt twice a day, you may well be amazed at how quick-working and effective it is. Can't promise obviously, but if you Google 'cherry juice' and 'gout' you'll see it seems to work very well for very many people. Certainly did for me. Get some today if you can. Good luck!

This is the stuff:

I was put on Allopurinol but was allergic to it. It caused my lips to swell up. Glad to hear you are cleared now. I had a minor attack on my finger this past week, no sympathy from the wife.

My old dear is hopefully gonna save the day. She has some naproxen in her cupboard and they will be with me in a couple of hours. And on her way she's gonna stop at a Holland and Barrett for cherry juice.

I do have 2 colcichine tablets left but I'm not going to take them yet. I've already taken 2 this morning. Last time I followed the doctors orders and ended up sitting on a toilet with severe stomach cramps whilst emptying myself of nearly 8lbs of fluid. It's really nasty stuff.

I think it's time to go back on Allopurinol. I had been attack free for nearly 18 months so weened myself off. It's not as if I drink a lot either nowadays. Maybe have a couple of cans of cider on a Tuesday or weds evening and a couple on a Friday night whereas I used to be up the pub 4 nights a week drinking 5+ pints. When the footie season starts back up I shall only be drinking at football. That's the plan anyway.

I've never heard of this Indometacin. Is it an allopurinol alternative?

If anyone did this to me. After I'd stopped crying I think I'd kill them.

Just looked online, £16.49 for a 473ml bottle but value to be had in buying 4, comes to £44.47 with offers.

Cheers for looking mate but I don't think I've got £50 in the bank at the moment!

I'm becoming increasingly attracted to the Seville friendly now we've had that glut of signings. Have they released extra blocks yet? I'd like to give my new seat in SWC a try out.

Still WSL at present. May change soon, new kits and new players bring new enthusiasm ! Watch this space.

The thing with gout is finding out what your trigger is. I have identified 4 so far, asparagus, mussels, Marmite and broccoli. I still need to identify at least one more.

As much as my wife wants it to be it isn't beer, if it was I would be having attacks every day.

If you need medical advice ring 111. A doctor will ring you back, and if necessary, they can fax a prescription to your local chemist for your wife to pick up.

It was mulled wine that zapped me gout-wise this Winter, I'm pretty sure of it.

I didn't realise that. The missus is on the blower to them now.

Why haven't they invented a quick cure yet? Something that just gets straight into your system and neutralises the crystals straight away?
