Gordon Brown must be desperate.

And now the company I work that is being unfairly regulated will now have to deal with Mandelson and not Hutton anymore, I can't think if this is good news or bad news?

What's the issue with the regulations?

That the regulator POSTCOMM is unfairly biased against my companies competitors.
I will give you an example, when my company Royal Mail comes up with a new product for it's customers we have to show this to the regulator, who in turn shows it to our competitors!
This is not open and fair competition is it?

No. I also think it's unfair that the competitors can pick and choose the bits they want to compete for, whereas the Post Office has to provide all of the services.

I understand opening up the market for competition, as this can help drive down costs and improve efficiency, but too often the encumbent is this country is seen as the bad-guy. BT is another example, although this is less-so now.

I don't like all this agreeing with a left-winger now. Maggie wouldn't be pleased.

Yes quite you need some right wing pills quickly!!!

I am actually opposed to competition as I think Royal Mail should be the only provider in the market and be regulated by POSTCOMM on our own, we have built up our network with government help over the past 350 years and this is being destroyed by POSTCOMM.
However I do realise that competition is here and quite probably here to stay, so if we are to have competition in the postal market it needs to be fair for everyone, and not biased towards Royal Mail's competitors who have done nothing to help shape the postal network we have in this country over the past 350 years.

Oo-er. I'm with you 100% of the way on this Larus. The Post Office should be treated like the NHS. Completely off limits to the private sector. It's first and foremost an essential service.

The service that post offices, daily deliveries and the like provide can't and shouldn't be measured in terms of money but also quality of life for the old biddies, isolated communities, housebound and the like.

f*** sake. I sound like a limp bloody socialist now.

This also applies to:

Water
Gas
Electricity
Telecommunications

Essential yes, but pretty faceless and completely different kettle of fish. The Post Office is a communal meeting point, the postman often the only face some poor old dear sees, the daily delivery to remote areas should be a right. Local villages or even parts of towns without post offices can kill local communities.

Time for me to duck out before this gets all heated and political. It's Friday after all.

It's a shame that New Labour doesn't think like that.
