A perfectly well argued letter (if I say so myself) in today's Argus, spolied by a revolting picture.

It is impossible to buy The Argus these days without reading story after story involving Norman "me me me" Baker MP criticising something.

We recently had two examples (The Argus, March 31). H had a pop at the Tories for some party funding scam and also at the chairman of the South East Development Agency for having business interests in the area he is seeking to promote.

Usually, Mr Baker is making ridiculous remarks about the proposed stadium in Falmer, but there is no subject he is not prepared to put himself forward to rail against.

Regardless of the rights and wrongs of his numerous campaigns, I am sick of reading various reports which start "Lewes MP NOrman Baker criticised..." or "A complaint by Norman Baker...".

I realise it must make it easy for journalists when they have a local mouthpiece who is always ready to see his name in print. I cannot remember ever reading a story involving this megalomaniac in which he was praising, endorsing or welcoming anything or anybody.

I don't know if I am glad I don't live in Lewes so he doesn't represent me, or sad because I would like to have the opportunity to vote for someone who would promote this lovely part of the world.

Not quite as good though, as the letter from Roy Hilliard, Old Shoreham Road, Portslade, who proposes to move the Clock Tower from North Street to the West Pier, in order to reduce traffic congestion...

I was in hospital a few weeks ago & was listening to James Whale on TalkSport. And who should come on? Norman 'fuckwit' Baker. As if i wasn't feeling poorly enough already.

I lived in Lewes for 5 years '79-'84. I f***ing glad I don't live there now.

Baker is more ringpiece than mouthpiece, I bet the good burghers of Lewes can't wait till the next election when they can get rid of him, one of the benefits of living in a democracy.

That one about moving the clock tower to the west pier is a cracker, surprised he hasn't suggested moving the Pavillion to Falmer...would look far nicer in a Downland setting!!!

Fair point doug, everyone is hacked off with Labour and nobody has a clue what the Tories stand for anymore, least of all their leadership, he will probably increase his majority.

Norman Baker is my MP and whilst I think he's a twat, I'm afraid enough people in the Lewes area think he is wonderful, to ensure he remains an MP for as long as he wants to.

Unfortunately if you polled his constituents re Falmer, I'm pretty sure the majority would be against it.

You are right about the electorate having long memories, most people in their mid fourties or older remember Labour from the mid 70's with power cuts and the three day week, they would never vote for them. People in their thirties and early fourties remember the end of the Thatcher years, the miners strike, the Falklands War and scandals like cash for questions, they would never vote Tory.

That is the problem isn't it, there is very little chance of Labour winning most seats in the rural parts of the south east, most places you could nominate a monkey with a blue scarf and it would get elected...at least the Lib Dems are an electable alternative.

Rubbish. Sir Tufton Beamish was everything you could ask for in a Tory MP: silly name, hard drinking and a hang 'em and fog 'em attitude to law and order.

What a terrible indictment on the electorate of Lewes, Newhaven, Seaford and Peacehaven. But I'm sure you're right.

Tim Rathbone, and Colonel Sir Tufton-Beamish were the previous incumbents. One only saw them at election time or if there was free drink on offer.
